Does Aspiration of the Toe, Foot, or Ankle Hurt?

  • Aspiration is usually the first procedure discussed in attempting to remove a ganglion cyst at your podiatrist’s office.
  • This technique involves simply penetrating the nodule of fluid and draining it.
  • It is a straightforward and safe procedure to perform that can be done in approximately 15 minutes at the podiatrist’s office after the anesthetic has set it.
  • You can walk on your foot almost immediately unless it is in a sensitive area. Thus except for wound healing, recovery time is short!

Causes of the ganglion cyst:

  • There is still some confusion over what truly causes this.
  • But mainly what happens is joint fluid pours out of the joint.
  • This almost looks like a balloon squeezing out of the joint.

What is inside a ganglion cyst?

  • There is a fluid inside the ganglion cyst called synovial fluid.
  • This is a pocket that pours out of the joint.
  • This is a clear, jellylike fluid.

Does aspiration of a ganglion cyst hurt?

The answer can be yes or no. It depends on how it is done:

  • The answer is that it depends on how the ganglion cyst is drained.
  • Personally, in the clinic, we know to numb up the site with a skinny needle freeze spray. While this does staying a little bit, it is not too bad. We promise!
Most of our patients do say that they can barely feel the post.
  • At this point. We wait five minutes, in the site should be completely numb.
  • Next, we use an 18gauge needle, and we drain the ganglion cyst.
  • At this point, the ganglion cyst is completely numb, and it does not have to hurt that much.

How can you permanently get rid of a ganglion cyst in your foot?

There are two main treatment options for this:

  • Your podiatrist can either aspirate the cyst with the needle.
  • The second option is that you can perform surgery in the operating room.

Home Treatment of a Ganglion Cyst:

  • Unfortunately, home treatment and home remedies are not reliable or safe for a ganglion cyst.
  • While we do want you to have an easy solution, see your podiatrist for this one!

  • But this caused a lot of pain and damage and did not really make the ganglion cyst go away.

Who can aspirate a ganglion cyst?

  • We are podiatrists to numb up and drain ganglion cysts in the foot, toes, and ankle.
  • If you need one performed in the wrist or the hand, you may want to see a hand specialist called an orthopedic surgeon.
  • For other parts of your body, this may also be done by a dermatologist.

Ganglion Cyst Aspiration Procedure:

The patients are evaluated 1st at the podiatrist’s office to ensure they really have a ganglion cyst. When the podiatrist is sure that this is what it is, they will apply some local anesthetic to the patient’s skin to numb the skin before the needle stick.

  • The podiatrist then gets an 18, 22, or 25 gauge needle attached to a 10 ml or more surgery and penetrated the cyst.
  • The podiatrist then slowly removes the fluid by sucking it back into the needle chamber.
  • The podiatrist may choose to inject an analgesic medication such as corticosteroid into the joint aft the fluid has been withdrawn to decrease inflammation.
  • A dressing is then applied to the needle stick site, but some antibiotic ointment and a bandage may usually be applied.
  • The patient will remain for another 20 minutes to ensure there is no reaction to the treatment.

Ganglion Cyst Aspiration Recovery Time:

The patient is usually completely free to go after the needle aspiration with no recovery time beyond a sore needle stick.  The only potential for a longer recovery time is if it is in a sensitive area.

  • Almost no recovery time!

Surgical treatment for ganglion cysts:

  • The non-surgical treatment for a ganglion cyst is called a joint or ganglion cyst aspiration.
  • This consists of numbing up the site with an anesthetic and then using an 18gauge needle to drain the site.
  • Surgical procedures are usually performed in the operating room.
  • If the cyst is on top of your foot, it is usually pretty easy to cut the cyst out, in the recovery time should be short.
  • You are usually addressing the surgical shoe for 2 to 3 weeks, but he can walk the whole time.
