Corn Removal in Michigan — When Home Treatment Isn’t Enough

Corn Removal in Michigan — When Home Treatment Isn’t Enough

What’s the Difference Between a Corn and a Callus?

A callus is a broad, flat area of thickened skin. A corn is a smaller, more concentrated buildup with a hard central core that points inward — pressing on nerves and causing sharp, focused pain. Corns commonly develop on the tops and sides of toes (hard corns) and between the toes (soft corns). At Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell and Bloomfield Hills, corn removal is a common and effective treatment we provide daily.

Why Corns Keep Coming Back

Most patients who treat corns at home with corn pads or files notice they return within weeks. This is because treating a corn without addressing the underlying cause guarantees recurrence. Corns form because of focal pressure — usually from a toe deformity (hammertoe, claw toe), a bony prominence, or ill-fitting shoes that create constant friction at a specific spot. Until that mechanical cause is corrected, the corn will grow back.

Professional Corn Removal

At Balance Foot & Ankle, corn treatment includes sharp debridement of the corn with sterile instruments, assessment of the underlying structural cause, padding and offloading strategies, footwear evaluation, and custom orthotic fabrication to correct the underlying biomechanics. For recurring corns on bony prominences from hammertoes or other structural deformities, we may discuss minimally invasive surgical correction if conservative measures don’t provide lasting relief.

Warning: Corn Pads for Diabetic Patients

Over-the-counter corn pads containing salicylic acid are contraindicated for diabetic, neuropathic, and vascular patients. These acidic pads can damage healthy surrounding skin and create wounds in patients who can’t feel the burning and can’t heal quickly. If you have diabetes or circulation problems, never use medicated corn pads — see a podiatrist instead.

Corn Removal by a Podiatrist in Michigan: Why Professional Treatment Is Safer Than Home Remedies

Corns — focused areas of hyperkeratosis (thickened skin) that develop at pressure points on the foot, typically over bony prominences on the toes — are one of the most common foot complaints in Michigan patients and one of the most frequently mismanaged. Over-the-counter corn removal products (salicylic acid pads, corn caps, callus-removing liquids) work by chemically dissolving the thickened skin — but they cannot distinguish between the corn and the normal surrounding skin, and in diabetic patients, immunocompromised patients, and patients with peripheral arterial disease, the chemical erosion they cause can convert a benign corn into a wound with serious infection potential. For high-risk patients, OTC corn removers are contraindicated and potentially dangerous.

Professional corn removal at Balance Foot & Ankle uses sterile debridement instruments to selectively remove the hyperkeratotic tissue with precision that OTC products cannot achieve — leaving normal surrounding skin intact, painlessly reducing the corn to the level of normal skin, and addressing the underlying pressure cause through footwear recommendations, padding, and when indicated, custom orthotics or toe sleeve cushioning to redistribute the pressure that caused the corn. Corns that recur consistently at the same location are telling you that the pressure that produced them has not been eliminated — podiatric corn treatment that addresses only the corn without the pressure is temporary relief. At Balance Foot & Ankle, we address both the corn and its cause. Michigan patients with painful corns should call (810) 206-1402 for a podiatric evaluation at our Howell or Bloomfield Hills location.
