Flat Feet Surgery Pros and Cons: Best Treatment at Home 2020

Flat Feet Surgery Pros & Cons: Surgery can be very successful, but depending on the procedure, the recovery time can be longer. We believe in good biomechanics and support no matter what procedure you choose!

What is flatfoot surgery?

Flatfoot surgery is a combination of surgical procedures to straighten the foot’s structure. This may include repair of the foot ligaments or tendons. It may also include correcting the deformities of the bone to restore the shape of the arch. These surgeries can vary in length, and their goal is determined to reduce pain and help the patient return towards a pain-free lifestyle.

Types of flatfoot reconstruction:

A therapy for your flat feet does not always have to be in the form of surgery. In fact, we prefer non-surgical therapy for at least 75% plus of our patients.

Nonsurgical treatment:

In the vast majority of the cases. Flat fee can be corrected without surgery. Especially if these are detected early before advanced arthritis takes place.

Our favorite therapies include:

Orthotic inserts:

This is probably the number one solution we find to be an effective.

An insole can be added to the shoe, this inverts the heel and inverts the front of the foot. This takes pressure off the plantar fascia, the poster tibial tendon, and the subtalar joint. We find that these are the regions that are most sore.

Good shoes:

Great shoes combined with a good insert will solve flatfoot pain for the vast majority of people in our experience. We recommend wearing shoes that can fit in orthotic, shoes that generally have a tongue that can move up and down to accommodate a good orthotic, and as stiff designed to support your foot. After hours of standing.

These do not have to be a good shoes!

There is a myth that these have to be ugly orthopedic shoes, we simply want a shoe that fits properly, can fit in orthotic it can hold insert.

Flat Feet Surgery Pros and Cons: Best Treatment at Home 2020
The most common complaint people have with flat feet is stretching through their plantar fascia. This can cause morning pain, but also sore feet at the end of the day with a busy day of walking.

Home treatment of Flat Feet:

  • If you are lucky enough to catch this serious problem in the early stages, there are things you can do to prevent any type of more invasive treatment.
  • The goal of home treatment is to stabilize the foot from flattening and to relieve pressure from it.
  • Your body can heal then let the inflammation and prevent future flattening of your foot.

Good Orthotics:

  • Great orthotics can help take pressure off the ball of your foot.

Overview:
These work best in shoes with laces and running shoes. Not good for dress shoes or women's cute shoes.
Biggest and most corrective option. Only use for running shoes or work boots. Not cute shoes.
These are full length inserts, but softer. Great if you can't tolerate the firmer ones. Best for very sore and sensitive feet.
Pros:
Pretty much guaranteed to help you if it fits in your shoes and you give it 2 weeks to get used to. 5,000+ amazon reviews, great track record.
My personal favorite, but not for everyone. Amazing reviews over 3,500. But not for everyone. Only for bigger shoes that can fit them
They are softer and the initial break in time is AMAZING. But longer term benefits are less. >500 Almost 5 star amazon rating.
Cons:
Do not wear these in cute or dress shoes!
Bigger and bulkier than all the other ones. You will be dissappointed if you have a cute women's shoe or dress shoe. This is meant for running shoes and boots.
Great to start with, but don't correct long term as much as the other ones.
Crucial Tips:
Ease in to these, 1-2hrs a day. They are like braces for your teeth, they suck at the beginning! But they will make your feet pain free as 1-2 weeks go by. Don't give up on them after 1 or 2 days. Everyone feels off at the beginning!
This has the most correction, but hardest break in time! IF SENSITIVE, USE A SOFTER PAIR FIRST! But if you get these, you must break them in. Give it 1-2 hours a day, but then you will start to have excellent results. The bad reviews are all people who couldn't fit it into their shoes and gave up too quickly. You have been WARNED!
If you are very sore, TRY THESE FIRST! These are easiest to break in with initially. If you are very sore and rigid, don't use the heavy duty ones to start with.
Amazon Reviewer Comments (Make sure to do your own review research through the link):
"These have worked well for my plantar fasciitis. It's not cured, but has helped. I wish they had a higher arch, but they are doing what they are intended to do. Some others have complained about the durability. I've had them for about 5 months, and they are just fine. "
" The Powerstep inserts are definitely the best for me in terms of arch support and comfort, and the Pinnacle Maxx inserts make a MAJOR positive difference in my comfort and ability to get around."
"Plantar Fasciitis pain was getting pretty bad, so I bought these insoles looking for some relief. On Day One, I noticed that it was not as painful to walk as the prior day; still sore but a marked improvement. It's now Day Two and I'm not nearly feeling the pain that I felt before I tried these insoles"

Overview:
This is my top choice due to best fit. It is a little less supportive than full length, but fit is the key in dress shoes!
Best option if you can fit a full length orthotic. This does give you most control.
Pros:
Excellent overall fit. This will fit in almost every dress shoe. Excellent reviews and reasonable cost overall. Can't go wrong in most cases.
Great color dress option. Not the most corrective, but very color and dress appropriate. Great Reviews. Better correction and relief than the 3/4" length.
Cons:
Less correction than full length and heavy duty orthotics.
These can have a poor fit in in some shoes. If you have tight shoes, DO NOT BUY the full length orthotic! You have been warned.
Crucial Tips:
If you haven't used dress orthotics before, get this one and avoid poor fit. If you wear dress shoes every day with room, the full length might give you more support.
This is will work great in most men's shoes that are not pointy. If you have a rounded toe box, this will probably work well. If a tight shoe go with the 3/4" length.
Amazon Reviewer Comments (Make sure to do your own review research through the link):
"Great orthotics. Ease in to shape to your foot just enough, yet comfortable right out of the box. Leather construction makes them breathable. They are good for a wide foot, while not over stretching and ruining one's shoes!"
"I have bought many different OTC orthotics due to plantar fasciitis. These are among the best. I use them exclusively now and they feel good inside both sports and shoes I wear to the office that have removable insoles."

Overview:
Great 3/4" choice. These work great in every shoe without laces. Not meant for heavy duty correction.
These are the best fitting for the most narrow shoes. Some but not great correction.
Pros:
Excellent fit, they are reliable with excellent reviews. You are going to be happy with these, just never SUPER happy because they don't correct as much.
They will fit in even the tightest shoes! Guaranteed to make you feel better, but you know what you are getting in a tight shoes. Great reviews and price.
Cons:
They are not super corrective. In some cases its like trying to using a 2 seat car to haul gravel. It looks and feels great but does
At the end of the day high heels and slender orthotics help, but never cure all your pain. Make the best of a painful shoe!
Crucial Tips:
These have a faster break in period than the heavy duty type. If after a few weeks
**WARNING***: If your shoe almost just barely fits onto your foot, this WILL NOT FIT! Be aware, it still needs a small amount of space to fit.
Amazon Reviewer Comments (Make sure to do your own review research through the link):
"This orthotic is the best I have tried, the other Powerstep have too high an arch for my feet, and are too thick in one's shoes, this one is just perfect, mild pronation and arch support, they are very comfortable yet do not give way due to their rigid support underneath, I use them in all my shoes as they are 3/4 and I do not have to take the sole from my shoes nor order a size up as I used to."
"These insoles provide as much support as the Powerstep originals. The insoles are comfy and they are long lasting. I've had one pair for a year now and they are just starting to show signs of wear. "

Good Shoes:

  • Another thing we have seen frequently is people switching from a pair of high heels, a pair of flats, a pair of flexible and unsupportive shoes.
  • The switch is made into a good supportive running shoe.
  • A great running shoe combined with a great choice for an affordable over-the-counter orthotic lead to a near instant offloading of pain.
  • This orthotic with an issue takes almost all the pressure off the second metatarsal joint.
  • This leads to a near instant relief of pressure, along the joint to heal over the next few weeks or months.

Rest and ice:

  • Ice for 20 minutes at a time.
  • Ice this as long as possible to get the foot feeling better.
  • Take a 1 hour break in between.

Stretching:

  • The number one cause of second toe capsulitis and front of the foot pain is high arched foot in a tight Achilles tendon.
  • We have great success to relieve this pain by stretching Achilles tendon, it is practical that over 3 to 4 weeks this condition can improve enough to remove the paint from the front of the foot.
  • As your foot has more flexibility in bending up, it makes sense that there is less pressure on the front of the foot.

Overview:
Hard Night Splint -** Use it before going to bed for 20-30 minutes**
Best & most comfortable splint for actual night time use.
Top of the foot softer & more gentle splint.
Pros:
This is an amazing device with the highest amazon rating. Has 2 great foot wedges that bend your big toe up and lock your foot in. Great at what it does.
This has excellent reviews(better than the hard splint), less foot numbness and soreness in the ball of your foot. Very soft and comfortable.
Most people can tolerate this one during the night, but only because it stretches you less! That might be a good thing if you can set it and forget it for 6-8 hours at night.
Cons:
Hard to use at while sleeping, so don't use it that way! Easy to use it incorrectly if you don't use the foot wedges correctly. Your big toe should be angled up to lock your foot in.
It actually stretches you less (that's why you are able to wear it all night). It is more expensive.
Basically it is more tolerable because it is weaker. This less results in more time.
Important Tips:
**Must use the foot wedge in the front to angle your toes up. This locks your foot from twisting out rather than stretching through the Achilles tendon - This is the KEY!**
If you prefer to actually wear it at night then this is the BEST option. It does work, but this is for those with very little time and can fall asleep in it!
This is meant only for sleeping because to get results you need to wear it a lot longer than the other braces. Use it only if you are very sensitive.
Amazon Reviewer Comments (Make sure to do your own review research through the link):
"A friend is a physical therapist and she recommended this one. It beats the $200 one from my ortho!!! So much more comfy, so much lighter. I did have to take the "foot ramp" out of the front to hold my foot in the alignment my doc wanted, but it's easy to do. "
"Like all the others I’ve tried, it takes a little getting used to. But this is the most comfortable and therefore works the best... gotta be willing to wear it for it to work."
"I purchased this at the recommendation of my PT to address Achilles tendonitis. I found the splint comfortable to wear and was sleeping with it all night on the second day. More importantly, it prevented that painful tightness of the tendon the next morning."

Great Stretching Device While Standing. (4.9 Amazon Rating)
Plastic and Lighter Plantar Fascia & Achilles Stretching Device.
Premium Best Rated Wood Ankle Stretch Device.
Uses gravity to stretch your hamstring for you. Great reviews and track record.
Pros:
Very sturdy and durable. Great bottom grip and weight so it won't slide on you. Perfect 5 star review on Amazon.
Amazing cost, still works and 1,300+ 5 star reviews. Works great overall and gives you the same stretch.
Near perfect 4.8 star review on Amazon. Great sturdy device that stretches your calf and hamstring. All you have to do is lean forward. Can be very effective.
Reviews on Amazon are >4.5 overall with hundreds of reviews. It uses gravity to stretch for you, allows you to also use your hips. Gets great results.
Cons:
More expensive and built like a tank = more weight. If you can't balance well or support yourself it could be dangerous.
The plastic and less bulk/grip makes it more dangerous to slip. Less premium feel to it.
Nothing wrong with the product, as the reviews suggest, but at the end of the day you can do this stuff yourself (just a little bit harder).
These are stretches that you realistically can do on your own. If budget is tight, this is not worth it. If you need help with hamstring stretching, it can make all the difference.
Important Tips:
Make sure you can balance yourself well against a counter/railing. Do only one foot at a time to prevent falling. Uses your body weight to stretch for you.
Even more important to balance yourself well with this device, make sure you don't injure yourself with this thing! Still gives you a great stretch to the area.
Make sure you balance yourself on a counter/railing. You need to keep up with this daily at least 15-30 second x 3 or so per morning. It doesn't stretch for you!
Need to do 3-5 stretches per day 15-30 seconds. You should notice a massive difference to knee and hamstring tightness. You can massage roll ahead to time for better results for 30-60 seconds.
Amazon Reviewer Comments (Make sure to do your own review research through the link):
"Wow what a difference this calf stretcher has made! I have suffered from calfs being super tight for years from years of figure skating training. I would stretch and they always just felt right still. Having this wonderful thing helped me to skate as well as feel like a was walking lighter than ever. It is super sturdy as well!!"
"f you suffer from chronic heel pain due to PF (plantar faciitis), you can immediately improve your situation by ordering this and USING IT DAILY, as per the directions in the box. In addition to night bracing, semi-rigid arch supports, and in some cases, personal weight loss, this device forms the foundation of your treatment program to overcome/manage your PF."
"This slant is so sturdy, the grips are amesome, I feel very secure and balanced when standing on it. Thank you so much for your wonderful product!"
"As a younger personal trainer I used to scoff at any of these stretcher-type items, figuring that there are all kinds of ways to stretch problem areas of the body without a gadget like this. But now I'm older and deal with older clients, including myself. Many times people just need a little help getting to the point where they can get past the initial stiffness and adhesions so they can stretch without an aid like this device. "

The plastic and less bulk/grip makes it more dangerous to slip. Less premium feel to it.
Important Tips:
Even more important to balance yourself well with this device, make sure you don't injure yourself with this thing! Still gives you a great stretch to the area.

Price:

Overview:
Premium Best Rated Wood Ankle Stretch Device.
Pros:
Near perfect 4.8 star review on Amazon. Great sturdy device that stretches your calf and hamstring. All you have to do is lean forward. Can be very effective.
Cons:
Nothing wrong with the product, as the reviews suggest, but at the end of the day you can do this stuff yourself (just a little bit harder).
Important Tips:
Make sure you balance yourself on a counter/railing. You need to keep up with this daily at least 15-30 second x 3 or so per morning. It doesn't stretch for you!

Uses gravity to stretch your hamstring for you. Great reviews and track record.
Pros:
Reviews on Amazon are >4.5 overall with hundreds of reviews. It uses gravity to stretch for you, allows you to also use your hips. Gets great results.
Cons:
These are stretches that you realistically can do on your own. If budget is tight, this is not worth it. If you need help with hamstring stretching, it can make all the difference.
Important Tips:
Need to do 3-5 stretches per day 15-30 seconds. You should notice a massive difference to knee and hamstring tightness. You can massage roll ahead to time for better results for 30-60 seconds.
Amazon Reviewer Comments (Make sure to do your own review research through the link):
"As a younger personal trainer I used to scoff at any of these stretcher-type items, figuring that there are all kinds of ways to stretch problem areas of the body without a gadget like this. But now I'm older and deal with older clients, including myself. Many times people just need a little help getting to the point where they can get past the initial stiffness and adhesions so they can stretch without an aid like this device. "
