High Arches & Supination — Why Shoe Selection Is Different
Supination (underpronation) — running with the foot remaining in inversion (rolling outward) through the gait cycle rather than transitioning to neutral or mild pronation at midstance — creates specific shoe demands that are the opposite of overpronation needs. A supinating runner needs: maximum midsole cushioning to compensate for the reduced shock absorption of the rigid high-arch foot (which does not flatten and dissipate impact the way a flexible flat foot does); a neutral or curved last that follows the foot’s natural inward curve (not a straight-lasted stability shoe that would push the foot further into supination); and a flexible midsole that does not restrict the foot’s limited natural motion. Stability and motion-control shoes — appropriate for overpronators — are contraindicated for supinators. They will make supination-related ankle sprains, lateral band IT syndrome, and stress fractures worse. As a podiatrist at Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, here are the best running shoes for high arches and supination in 2026.
Best Cushioned Neutral Shoe for Supination 2026 — ASICS Gel-Nimbus 26
📍 Located in Michigan?
Our board-certified podiatrists treat this condition at two convenient locations. Same-day appointments often available.
The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 26 is the most consistently recommended neutral maximum-cushion shoe for supinating runners. The FLYTE FOAM BLAST+ midsole provides responsive cushioning that compensates for the reduced natural shock absorption of the high-arch rigid foot; the rearfoot GEL technology absorbs heel strike impact; and the curved last follows the supinator’s foot shape. The Nimbus 26 provides the cushioning needed for supinating runners without any medial posting or stability features that would worsen supination. Available in wide widths. Best for: high-arch supinators running 20–50 miles/week; runners with a history of lateral ankle sprains, peroneal tendinopathy, or IT band syndrome from supination; and runners who have damaged orthoses from supination-related lateral wear patterns.
Best Lightweight Neutral Shoe for Supination 2026 — Brooks Ghost 16
The Brooks Ghost 16 provides a neutral, balanced midsole with DNA LOFT v3 cushioning in a lighter package than the maximum-cushion Nimbus class — appropriate for supinating runners who find maximum-cushion shoes too heavy or “dead” feeling. The segmented crash pad accommodates varied foot strikes, including the lateral heel strike typical of supinators. The plush interior reduces irritation of the lateral forefoot and fifth metatarsal prominences common in high-arch supinators. Available in multiple widths. Best for: recreational runners with mild-moderate high arches and supination; runners transitioning from stability shoes who have identified supination as their foot type.
Custom Orthotics for Supination — Lateral Wedging
Custom orthotics for high-arch supinators are different from typical orthotics — they should NOT provide medial arch support (which would increase supination) but instead provide lateral heel and forefoot wedging that tilts the foot slightly toward pronation. A 3–5 degree lateral rearfoot post reduces the supination moment during stance, decreasing lateral ankle stress and peroneal tendon load. Combined with a maximum-cushion neutral shoe, a correctly designed supination orthotic significantly reduces the ankle sprain risk and lateral band overuse injuries that plague high-arch runners. Many supinating runners are incorrectly prescribed medial arch supports — if your arch support is making your lateral ankle worse, discuss lateral posting with your podiatrist.
Supination & High Arch Treatment at Balance Foot & Ankle
At Balance Foot & Ankle, we perform pressure plate gait analysis to identify supination patterns and design custom orthotics with lateral wedging appropriate for high-arch runners. In-office ultrasound evaluates peroneal tendons for the tendinopathy that frequently accompanies chronic supination. MLS laser therapy for peroneal tendinopathy and lateral ankle pain from supination-related ligament stress is available. Book online or call (810) 206-1402 — Howell and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
