Medical Pedicure in Michigan — What It Is & Why It’s Safer Than a Salon
What Is a Medical Pedicure?
A medical pedicure (sometimes called a “medi-pedi” or podiatric pedicure) is a comprehensive foot care service performed by a licensed podiatrist or podiatric assistant — not an esthetician. It combines the thoroughness of professional nail and skin care with the safety, sterility, and clinical expertise of medical practice. At Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell and Bloomfield Hills, our podiatric foot care services offer everything a spa pedicure does — and much more.
Medical Pedicure vs. Nail Salon Pedicure: The Differences
Instruments: Medical pedicures use autoclave-sterilized, medical-grade instruments. Nail salons use instruments that may be inadequately sterilized between clients — a real infection risk, especially for high-risk patients.
Provider training: Podiatrists complete 4 years of medical school plus residency training specifically focused on foot and ankle anatomy, pathology, and medicine. Nail technicians complete a 300–600 hour esthetic program.
Clinical assessment: A medical pedicure visit includes assessment of circulation, sensation, skin integrity, nail health, and early signs of pathology. A spa pedicure does not.
Treatment capability: If a problem is discovered — a suspicious lesion, an early infection, a structural issue — the podiatrist can address it immediately or refer appropriately. A nail salon cannot.
Insurance: For qualifying patients (diabetes, neuropathy, vascular disease), medical nail care is covered by Medicare and most insurers. Spa pedicures are not.
Who Should Make the Switch?
Diabetic patients, patients with peripheral neuropathy or vascular disease, patients on blood thinners, patients with toenail fungus or recurring ingrown nails, seniors with thick or difficult nails, and anyone who has had an infection or wound from a previous nail salon visit should transition to medical-grade foot care.

Medical Pedicure in Michigan: The Difference Between a Podiatric Nail Care Visit and a Salon Pedicure
A medical pedicure — performed by a licensed podiatrist or podiatric medical assistant using sterile instruments and clinical technique — is fundamentally different from a salon pedicure in ways that matter significantly for high-risk patients. The instrument sterilization used in podiatric offices uses autoclave sterilization between patients, eliminating the cross-contamination risk that has produced documented fungal and bacterial infection outbreaks at salons using inadequate sterilization of nail instruments. The clinical technique used for nail debridement, cuticle care, and callus reduction follows protocols designed to avoid the skin breaks and tissue trauma that create infection entry points — particularly important for diabetic patients, immunocompromised patients, and patients on anticoagulants where minor cuts have outsize consequences.
At Balance Foot & Ankle, we perform professional podiatric nail care for Michigan patients who need clinical-quality nail and skin management — whether for medical necessity (diabetes, immunosuppression, anticoagulation) or for patients who simply want the confidence that their nail care is being performed safely and thoroughly. Our podiatric nail care visit includes: debridement of thickened or fungal toenails using the appropriate instrument technique for each nail condition; gentle callus and corn reduction using sterile debridement instruments; nail fold care to prevent ingrown toenail development; and a visual assessment of each foot’s skin and vascular status. Michigan patients who have been told by a salon that their toenails are “too thick” or “too difficult” — or who are at medical risk and should not receive salon nail care — should call Balance Foot & Ankle at (810) 206-1402 for professional podiatric nail care at our Howell or Bloomfield Hills office.
