Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) can be used to purchase many podiatrist-approved foot care products — tax-free. This guide covers the most commonly FSA/HSA-eligible items our patients ask about, along with links to book appointments for services that are always covered.
💡 Important: FSA/HSA eligibility rules vary by plan administrator. Items designated as “medical devices” or “medical equipment” are typically eligible. Always verify with your plan before purchasing. Custom orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist are FSA/HSA eligible when associated with a medical diagnosis.
Always FSA/HSA Eligible: Podiatrist Services
Any visit to our office — including custom orthotic fittings, nail procedures, wound care, laser treatments, and diagnostic imaging — is FSA/HSA eligible as a qualified medical expense. Your insurance EOB or itemized receipt serves as documentation.
📅 Book a podiatry appointment — your visit, procedures, and prescribed custom orthotics all qualify for FSA/HSA reimbursement.
Custom Orthotics — FSA/HSA Eligible with Prescription
Doctor-prescribed custom orthotics are FSA/HSA eligible when prescribed to treat a medical condition (plantar fasciitis, flat feet, diabetic foot care, etc.). At Balance Foot & Ankle, our 3D-scanned custom orthotics come with a written prescription and diagnosis codes your FSA/HSA administrator requires. New patients receive custom orthotics included with their first visit.

🦶 Best OTC Option — PowerStep Pinnacle (FSA/HSA Often Eligible, No Rx Needed)
The OTC orthotic I recommend most in our clinic. While custom orthotics require a prescription for FSA/HSA, PowerStep Pinnacle is a medical-grade arch support device typically FSA/HSA eligible without a prescription — keep your receipt and check with your plan administrator. I use PowerStep to bridge the gap for patients waiting for custom orthotics.

Night Splints — Typically FSA/HSA Eligible
Night splints used to treat plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinopathy are classified as medical devices and are typically FSA/HSA eligible. Keep your receipt and your podiatrist’s recommendation documentation for reimbursement.

Ankle Braces & Supports — Typically FSA/HSA Eligible
Ankle braces and supports used to treat a diagnosed ankle injury, instability, or post-surgical recovery are medical devices eligible for FSA/HSA spending. Over-the-counter ankle braces for general wellness or sports performance are in a gray area — check your specific plan.

Compression Socks — FSA/HSA Eligible with Diagnosis
Medical-grade graduated compression socks (15 mmHg and above) are FSA/HSA eligible when recommended by a physician to treat venous insufficiency, lymphedema, DVT risk, or peripheral neuropathy. Standard athletic compression socks purchased without a medical recommendation are generally NOT eligible.

Diabetic Foot Care Products — Frequently FSA/HSA Eligible
Products used to manage diabetic foot complications — including diabetic shoes, therapeutic insoles, and wound care supplies — are typically FSA/HSA eligible. Medicare-approved diabetic shoes follow a separate benefit. See our full diabetic shoe guide for details.

🧦 Dr. Tom’s Compression Pick — NEWZILL Medical Socks (FSA/HSA Eligible with LMN)
Graduated medical compression (15–30 mmHg) designed to support venous return. I recommend NEWZILL to patients managing neuropathy, post-surgical swelling, and circulatory issues. With a physician’s Letter of Medical Necessity, NEWZILL medical-grade socks qualify for FSA/HSA reimbursement. We provide LMNs for qualifying patients at our Howell and Bloomfield Township offices.

How to Get Reimbursed
To submit a product for FSA/HSA reimbursement:
- Keep your itemized receipt showing the product name and medical purpose
- Ask your podiatrist for a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) if your plan requires one — we provide these for custom orthotics, night splints, and compression socks
- Submit through your FSA/HSA administrator’s portal with the receipt and LMN
- For over-the-counter items (post-CARES Act 2020), a prescription is no longer required for most OTC medical products — but check your plan
⏰ Use It or Lose It — FSA/HSA Expires December 31
⚠️ Most FSA accounts have a hard December 31 use-it-or-lose-it deadline. Unspent FSA dollars disappear — they don’t roll over. If you have a remaining FSA balance, a podiatry visit or custom orthotic fitting may be exactly what your feet need before year-end.
All of the following qualify for FSA/HSA reimbursement at our office:
- Podiatry office visits (new patient or follow-up)
- Custom orthotic fitting & 3D casting
- Laser nail fungus treatment
- Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for plantar fasciitis
- Diagnostic X-rays (available in-office, same day)
- Night splints, ankle braces, and medical compression socks (with LMN)
Our team will confirm your FSA/HSA eligibility before your visit.

Michigan patients with FSA or HSA accounts who want to maximize their tax-advantaged spending on foot health should understand both what qualifies and how to document eligibility. Podiatric office visits, custom orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist, therapeutic footwear (including the Medicare therapeutic shoe benefit for diabetic patients), and most foot care products used for a diagnosed medical condition are FSA/HSA eligible when prescribed or recommended by a licensed medical provider. Over-the-counter orthotics and foot care products are generally FSA/HSA eligible without a prescription under current IRS rules — check with your plan administrator to confirm. At Balance Foot & Ankle, we can provide a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) documenting the medical indication for custom orthotics, therapeutic footwear, or other recommended foot care products when FSA/HSA reimbursement documentation is needed. Michigan patients wanting to use their FSA or HSA benefits for podiatric care before year-end should call Balance Foot & Ankle at (810) 206-1402 to schedule at our Howell or Bloomfield Township office — FSA year-end deadlines make early scheduling important to ensure adequate time for any custom-fabricated items like orthotics.

Book Your AppointmentFSA & HSA Foot Care — Frequently Asked Questions
Does my FSA or HSA cover podiatry visits?
Yes. Podiatric office visits, exams, and in-office procedures are qualified medical expenses under both FSA and HSA plans. Your insurance EOB or an itemized receipt from our office serves as documentation. As always, confirm specifics with your plan administrator.
Are custom orthotics FSA/HSA eligible?
Custom orthotics are FSA/HSA eligible when prescribed by a podiatrist to treat a diagnosed medical condition such as plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or diabetic foot care. At Balance Foot & Ankle we provide the written prescription and diagnosis codes your administrator requires, plus a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) if your plan asks for one.
Do I need a prescription for over-the-counter foot care products?
For most OTC medical products, no. Since the CARES Act of 2020, a prescription is generally no longer required to use FSA/HSA funds for over-the-counter medical items — but eligibility rules vary by plan administrator, so keep your itemized receipt and verify before purchasing.
What documentation do I need for reimbursement?
Keep an itemized receipt showing the product name and its medical purpose. If your plan requires it, ask us for a Letter of Medical Necessity — we provide these for custom orthotics, night splints, and medical compression socks. Submit the receipt (and LMN, if needed) through your FSA/HSA administrator’s portal.
When does my FSA balance expire?
Most FSAs have a December 31 “use-it-or-lose-it” deadline, though some employers offer a short grace period or limited carryover — check your specific plan. Because items like custom orthotics are fabricated to order, schedule early so there is enough time before year-end. Call us at (810) 206-1402 to book at our Howell or Bloomfield Township office.
