New Balance 990 vs 1080: Podiatrist Guide — Stability vs Max Cushion
Two of New Balance’s most beloved running shoes — the 990v6 and the 1080v14 — represent entirely different design philosophies. The 990 is a heritage stability trainer built on decades of biomechanical research; the 1080 is a premium cushioned neutral shoe. As a podiatrist, I prescribe these to different patient profiles, and the choice between them has real clinical implications.

The Core Difference: ENCAP vs Fresh Foam X
The 990v6 uses ENCAP — a dual-density system with a polyurethane rim encapsulating softer foam. This creates a firm, structured midsole with a medial post that controls mild-moderate pronation. The ride is stable, responsive, and notably firm compared to modern max-cushion trainers.
The 1080v14 uses Fresh Foam X — New Balance’s most advanced cushion compound. At 39mm heel stack height, it delivers a plush, deeply cushioned ride with significant impact absorption. It’s closer in feel to the Hoka Bondi than to the 990. Lower drop (8mm vs 12mm) loads the posterior chain more.
Who Should Choose the New Balance 990v6?

Plantar Fasciitis: 990 or 1080?
For most PF patients, I lean toward the 990v6. Its 12mm drop is superior to the 1080’s 8mm drop for offloading the plantar fascia at push-off. The ENCAP stability also helps overpronators who develop PF from excessive arch collapse. The 1080 is the better choice for PF caused by fat pad atrophy or in neutral runners needing pure cushion.

| Achilles tendinopathy | 990v6 (higher drop) |
| Marathon training | 1080v14 |
| Mild overpronation | 990v6 |

FAQs
Is the 990v6 worth the $185 price?
For the right patient, yes. The 990’s durability, stability, and Made-in-USA construction justify the premium — especially for runners logging 50+ miles/week where shoes wear out quickly.
Which has better wide-width options?
Both come in 2E (wide) and 4E (extra wide) for men. The 990v6 also comes in EEEE (6E) extra-extra wide, making it one of the widest options available from any major brand — excellent for severe bunions or diabetic foot conditions.
Is the 1080 good for walking?
Yes — the 1080v14 is exceptional for all-day walking and standing. Its thick Fresh Foam cushion absorbs hours of impact on hard floors effectively.
