Foot taping is one of the oldest and most clinically validated techniques in sports medicine for managing plantar fasciitis — used by athletic trainers, physical therapists, and podiatrists for decades. There are two distinct approaches with different mechanisms and evidence bases: rigid athletic taping and kinesio (elastic) taping. Here is what the research shows for each.

Rigid Athletic Taping (Low-Dye Technique)

The Low-Dye strapping technique — developed by Ralph William Dye in the 1930s — uses inelastic athletic tape to mechanically support the medial longitudinal arch and restrict pronation. By reducing arch collapse and the resulting plantar fascial strain, it provides a biomechanical offload similar to what a good custom orthotic achieves.

Evidence for Low-Dye Taping

Multiple randomized controlled trials confirm that Low-Dye taping significantly reduces plantar fasciitis pain during the period of application. A landmark study by Landorf et al. showed equivalent short-term pain reduction between Low-Dye taping, sham taping, and custom orthotics — but with significantly less durable benefit than orthotics (since tape must be changed daily). Low-Dye taping is most valuable as a diagnostic tool (if taping provides significant relief, orthotics are likely to be effective) and as a bridge to custom orthotics.

Kinesio Taping (KT Tape Techniques)

Kinesio elastic tape (KT Tape, RockTape, Therabody) is applied with varying degrees of tension to theoretically: lift the skin to reduce pressure on pain receptors, facilitate or inhibit muscle activity, and enhance lymphatic drainage. For plantar fasciitis, kinesio tape is applied along the plantar fascia from the heel to the forefoot in various patterns.

Evidence for Kinesio Taping in Plantar Fasciitis

Evidence is mixed. Several studies show statistically significant short-term pain reduction with kinesio taping compared to no treatment. However, high-quality head-to-head trials suggest kinesio taping provides similar short-term effects to sham taping in some populations, suggesting placebo effects may contribute substantially. The current consensus: kinesio taping may provide modest short-term pain relief as an adjunct to other treatments; it should not replace evidence-based treatments like orthotics, stretching, and injections.

Practical Application

For patients who want to try taping between appointments:

  • Basic KT Tape plantar fasciitis application: apply one anchor strip across the base of the toes with 0% tension; apply a “Y-strip” from the heel with 50–75% tension splitting around the arch and meeting at the anchor strip; apply a second anchor over the first
  • Tape typically lasts 2–3 days before adhesion fails; remove gently with oil-based product to avoid skin irritation
  • Skin reactions are common — discontinue if redness, blistering, or significant irritation develops

In Our Clinic

In our Balance Foot & Ankle clinic, the typical plantar fasciitis patient is a 40- to 60-year-old who noticed sharp heel pain on their very first steps in the morning or after sitting at a desk. Many arrive having already tried cheap shoe-store inserts and a week of ice without relief. On exam, we palpate the medial calcaneal tubercle, check for a positive windlass test, and rule out Baxter’s neuropathy and calcaneal stress fractures. Most of our plantar fasciitis patients respond to a custom orthotic + eccentric calf loading + night splinting protocol within 6–12 weeks — without injections or surgery.

The Bottom Line

Taping (either rigid or kinesio) is a useful adjunct therapy for plantar fasciitis — particularly for symptomatic relief while awaiting custom orthotics, during athletic activities, or as a bridge between treatment milestones. It is not a substitute for addressing the biomechanical root cause with custom orthotics and stretching protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to cure plantar fasciitis?
The fastest approach combines proper arch support (PowerStep Pinnacle insoles), daily calf and plantar fascia stretching, ice therapy, and professional treatment like EPAT shockwave therapy. Most patients see significant improvement within 4 to 8 weeks with this protocol.
Is plantar fasciitis covered by insurance?
Yes. Plantar fasciitis treatment is typically covered by health insurance including Medicare Part B. Custom orthotics may require prior authorization. Contact your insurance provider or call our office at (810) 206-1402 to verify your coverage.
Can plantar fasciitis go away on its own?
Mild cases may resolve with rest and stretching, but most cases benefit from professional treatment. Without treatment, plantar fasciitis can become chronic and lead to compensatory injuries in the knees, hips, and back.
