Home Foot Care After Hip or Knee Replacement — Michigan Podiatry House Calls

After a hip or knee replacement, getting to a podiatrist’s office is one of the last things you want to do. You’re focused on your surgical recovery, your mobility is limited, and your foot care needs may be more pressing than ever. Balance Foot & Ankle makes house calls throughout Livingston County and Oakland County, Michigan — expert podiatric care delivered to you during your recovery.

Why Post-Replacement Patients Need Podiatric Care

Hip and knee replacement surgery affects everything from your walking mechanics to your ability to reach your own feet for basic nail care. Common foot issues that emerge or worsen during orthopedic recovery include:

  • Inability to reach feet — nails become overgrown, calluses worsen, ingrown toenails develop
  • Altered gait mechanics — walking differently to protect the surgical site creates new pressure points, calluses, and potential ulcer formation
  • Swelling and edema — post-surgical swelling extends to the feet and ankles, creating skin care and footwear challenges
  • Diabetic complications — patients with diabetes are at elevated risk during the surgical recovery period
  • DVT monitoring — swelling, pain, and color changes in the foot can signal deep vein thrombosis requiring urgent attention

What We Provide on Home Visits

  • Nail trimming and care — performed safely without compromising your recovery position
  • Callus and corn debridement
  • Wound and skin assessment
  • Diabetic foot evaluation
  • Edema assessment
  • Custom orthotic recommendations for when you resume regular walking
  • Diabetic shoe fitting if indicated

Coordinating with Your Orthopedic Team

We communicate our findings directly to your orthopedic surgeon and primary care physician. Our Livingston County patients often coordinate care through Wellbridge Rehabilitation Centers (Brighton, Pinckney, and Fenton), where Dr. Vassallo serves as medical director — giving your care team a direct connection.

Foot Care After Hip or Knee Replacement in Michigan: What to Expect During Recovery

Hip and knee replacement patients face a specific set of foot care challenges during the recovery period that are often underappreciated by the care team focused on the surgical joint. Post-hip replacement patients with posterior approach precautions — who cannot flex the hip beyond 90 degrees or cross the legs — literally cannot reach their own feet for the 6–12 weeks of precaution period. Nail trimming, callus management, and wound inspection become impossible without assistance. Post-knee replacement patients with limited knee flexion in the early weeks cannot easily bend the knee enough to reach the foot. Both groups benefit from professional podiatric foot care during the recovery period — either through home visit podiatry or through transportation to an accessible office setting.

Michigan hip and knee replacement patients are frequently discharged to home recovery without clear guidance on foot care during the precaution period. Balance Foot & Ankle provides post-surgical foot care for these patients at our Howell and Bloomfield Hills offices (both are accessible with a walker or cane and have no stairs to navigate for entry) or through home visits for patients who are non-weight-bearing on the surgical side and cannot safely use transportation. Common post-arthroplasty foot care issues include: toenail growth that reaches uncomfortable length during the recovery period; callus and skin changes from using a walker or crutches that alter foot strike pattern; and foot swelling (edema) that requires assessment to distinguish post-surgical edema from a complication of the prosthesis. Call Balance Foot & Ankle at (810) 206-1402 to schedule post-arthroplasty foot care at a time compatible with your surgical recovery restrictions.
