Your First Visit to Balance Foot & Ankle
We make it easy. Here’s everything you need to know before your first appointment.
We know visiting a new doctor can feel uncertain. Our goal is to make your first visit to Balance Foot & Ankle straightforward, comfortable, and productive—so you leave with a clear understanding of your condition and a plan to get better. Here’s exactly what to expect.
Before Your Visit: What to Bring
To make the most of your appointment, please bring the following:
- Photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
- Insurance card(s)
- List of current medications (including dosages)
- Any relevant medical records or imaging (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound) from previous providers
- Comfortable shoes you wear regularly—your footwear tells us a lot about how you walk and where pressure builds up
- Questions you’d like to ask—we want to make sure you leave without any unanswered questions
If you haven’t completed your new patient forms online in advance, please arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete them in the office. We’ll have everything ready for you.
What Happens During Your First Visit
Step 1: Check-In (5 minutes)
Our friendly front desk team will greet you, confirm your insurance information, and make sure your paperwork is in order. We do our best to stay on schedule so you’re not waiting long.
Step 2: Meeting Your Doctor (15–30 minutes)
Your podiatrist—Dr. Tom Biernacki, Dr. Carl Jay, or Dr. Daria Gutkin—will take time to listen. We want to understand not just your current pain, but your history, activity level, and goals. There are no rushed appointments here.
Step 3: Examination
Your doctor will perform a thorough examination of your foot and ankle. This may include:
- Gait analysis (observing how you walk)
- Range of motion testing
- Assessment of muscle strength, reflexes, and circulation
- Evaluation of foot structure, alignment, and pressure points
Step 4: Imaging (if needed)
If X-rays are needed to evaluate bone structure or rule out fractures, they can often be taken on-site at the same visit. We will explain why any imaging is being ordered and what we’re looking for.
Step 5: Diagnosis & Treatment Plan
After the examination, your doctor will explain their findings in plain language—no confusing medical jargon. You’ll understand exactly what’s going on and why. Together, you’ll discuss your treatment options, including conservative (non-surgical) approaches and, if relevant, surgical options. We will always start with the least invasive, most effective treatment first.
Step 6: Next Steps
Before you leave, you’ll have a clear plan: follow-up appointments scheduled, prescriptions filled (if any), referrals made, and any home care instructions explained in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my first appointment take?
Plan for 45–60 minutes for a new patient visit. Complex cases may take a bit longer.
Will I need X-rays at my first visit?
Not always. X-rays are ordered when they will provide information needed to diagnose or treat your condition. Your doctor will explain if and why they’re needed.
Can I bring a family member or caregiver?
Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring someone with you for support or to help remember information discussed during the visit.
What if I need surgery?
