Diet is an adjunct—not a replacement—for evidence-based podiatric treatment. I never tell patients to swap their orthotics for salmon. But I do tell them that if they’re still eating inflammatory foods, they’re working against their recovery. Nutrition is the upstream variable that determines how effectively the body heals.

Gout is the clearest example: dietary modification (reducing purine-rich foods, alcohol, fructose) directly reduces urate levels and attack frequency. For other conditions, the benefit is real but more indirect—reduced systemic inflammation improves tissue healing response and lowers pain sensitivity.

My practical recommendation: start by eliminating processed sugar and increasing vegetables. Don’t try to overhaul everything at once. Add fatty fish twice a week. Use olive oil instead of vegetable oil. These small changes compound over months into meaningful reductions in inflammatory load. Combined with proper biomechanical treatment, diet optimization is one of the highest-use lifestyle changes you can make.
