Metatarsalgia / hot foot — The most common cycling foot complaint. A burning, hot sensation under the ball of the foot (metatarsal heads), developing after 30–90 minutes of riding. Caused by metatarsal head compression inside a rigid cycling shoe with no cushioning under the forefoot.

Plantar numbness — Compression of the plantar nerves between metatarsal heads inside tight cycling shoes, or pressure from the cleat platform directly on nerve tissue, produces numbness and tingling in the forefoot during rides.
