Pregnancy Foot Pain: Why Your Feet Grow and What to Do About relates to foot pain — typically caused by overuse, footwear, or biomechanics. Most patients improve in 6-12 weeks with conservative care. Same-week appointments in Howell + Bloomfield Township: (810) 206-1402.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Tom Biernacki, DPM — Board-certified foot & ankle surgeon, 3,000+ surgeries performed. Updated April 2026 with current clinical evidence. This article reflects real practice experience from Balance Foot & Ankle Specialists in Howell and Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
Quick Answer
Most foot and ankle problems respond to conservative care — proper footwear, supportive inserts, activity modification, and targeted stretching — within 4-8 weeks. Persistent pain beyond that window, or any symptom that prevents walking, warrants a podiatric evaluation to rule out fracture, tendon tear, or systemic cause.

Pregnancy Foot Pain: Why Your Feet Grow and What to Do About It
By Dr. Tom Biernacki, DPM | Updated March 2026
If your feet seem to be getting bigger during pregnancy — you’re not imagining it. The relaxin hormone that loosens ligaments for childbirth also loosens the ligaments holding your arch in place. Combined with 25-35 lbs of additional weight, the result is arch flattening, foot lengthening, and new foot pain that many women have never experienced before. Here’s what’s happening and what to do about it.
The Pregnancy Foot Changes Timeline
First trimester: Relaxin begins circulating; feet may feel slightly looser or tired. Minimal visible changes. Begin insoles now to protect the arch before load increases.
Second trimester: Weight increases and arch flattening becomes noticeable. Morning heel pain may begin. Many women go up half a shoe size. Old shoes no longer fit correctly.
Third trimester: Maximum weight gain, maximum arch stress, swelling from venous pooling. Third trimester is when most pregnancy-related plantar fasciitis develops. Many women permanently gain a half to full shoe size after their first pregnancy.
Postpartum: Relaxin levels drop but the structural changes may persist. Some arch recovery occurs; in many women, the foot remains permanently changed. New orthotic fitting postpartum is recommended.
Best Products for Pregnancy Foot Pain
🥇 PowerStep Pinnacle: Our top pick for pregnancy arch support. The semi-rigid arch shell supports the progressively flattening arch as relaxin loosens ligaments and weight increases. Start wearing from second trimester or earlier for prevention. [AFFILIATE LINK — PowerStep Pinnacle]
🥈 Curex EditorsPick: For expectant mothers who find the fixed arch profile uncomfortable during pregnancy — the adaptive arch accommodates the rapid foot changes of each trimester more naturally than fixed orthotics. [AFFILIATE LINK — Curex EditorsPick]
🥉 Compression socks (15-20 mmHg): Third-trimester swelling responds dramatically to compression. Safe during pregnancy, reduces edema, prevents varicose vein formation. [AFFILIATE LINK — Compression Socks]
Wide-width supportive footwear: As feet widen and lengthen, previous shoes create bunion and metatarsal pressure. New Balance and Brooks both have excellent wide-width options that accommodate pregnancy foot changes with room for orthotics.
Safe Treatments During Pregnancy
OTC insoles, compression socks, calf stretches, and supportive footwear are all safe during pregnancy. Cortisone injections and prescription anti-inflammatories require discussion with your OB. Most plantar fasciitis resolves postpartum with proper support.

Expert Podiatric Care for Michigan Patients
Michigan patients dealing with foot and ankle problems benefit from evaluation by a board-certified podiatrist who can provide an accurate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment plan — rather than relying on symptom management alone. At Balance Foot & Ankle, we combine clinical examination, advanced imaging when indicated, and a thorough understanding of foot biomechanics to identify the underlying cause of the patient’s symptoms and design a treatment plan that addresses it. Our podiatrists are fellowship-trained in foot and ankle surgery and provide the full spectrum of care — from conservative treatment and custom orthotics to minimally invasive and reconstructive surgery. Michigan patients can call Balance Foot & Ankle at (810) 206-1402 for same-week appointments at our Howell (4330 E Grand River) and Bloomfield Township (43494 Woodward Ave #208) locations.
When to See a Michigan Foot Specialist
Michigan patients often delay seeking podiatric care, hoping that foot and ankle pain will resolve on its own — and sometimes it does. But there are clear clinical indicators that warrant timely professional evaluation: pain that persists beyond 4–6 weeks despite rest, icing, and over-the-counter treatment; pain that is worsening rather than stable; visible structural change such as swelling, bruising, or deformity; pain severe enough to alter your gait or limit your daily activities; or any foot problem in a patient with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or peripheral neuropathy, where even minor issues can progress rapidly. Balance Foot & Ankle makes it easy for Michigan patients to access expert care — we accept most major insurance plans, offer same-week new patient appointments, and have convenient locations in Howell and Bloomfield Township. Call (810) 206-1402 to schedule your evaluation.

More questions patients ask
Why do feet hurt and swell during pregnancy?
Pregnancy causes multiple foot changes: increased progesterone and relaxin hormones loosen ligaments, allowing the foot to spread and flatten (arch collapse); weight gain (25-35 lbs average) dramatically increases foot loading; fluid retention causes edema (swelling) that reduces shoe fit and circulation; the growing uterus compresses pelvic veins reducing venous return, worsening leg and ankle swelling; and the shift in center of gravity changes walking mechanics. Up to 76% of pregnant women experience significant foot pain, and over 60% experience permanent changes in foot length and width.
What's safe for foot pain during pregnancy?
Safe foot pain management during pregnancy: supportive shoes with wide toe boxes and low heels (flat shoes are actually often too low — small heel of 1-2cm is ideal); OTC arch support insoles (Powerstep, PowerStep Pinnacle — safe without medication); graduated compression socks (15-20 mmHg — proven safe and effective for pregnancy swelling); elevating feet for 20-30 minutes several times daily; gentle calf stretching; swimming or prenatal yoga; and seeing a podiatrist who can safely evaluate and fit orthotics. Avoid prolonged standing, tight shoes, and high heels throughout pregnancy.
Is it normal for feet to grow permanently during pregnancy?
Yes — about 60-70% of women experience permanent foot lengthening and widening after pregnancy. This is caused by ligament relaxation from relaxin hormone allowing arch collapse and the foot to spread under increased weight. The arch may not fully recover after delivery, particularly after multiple pregnancies. This is a medical reason to be fitted for supportive shoes and possibly orthotics postpartum — many cases of plantar fasciitis that start during pregnancy persist postpartum because the foot's changed mechanics are never addressed. See a podiatrist after delivery to assess your foot structure.
When should a pregnant woman see a podiatrist for foot problems?
See a podiatrist during pregnancy if: foot or ankle pain significantly limits daily activities; swelling is severe or rapid (rule out pre-eclampsia with your OB first); you develop a wound or skin problem on your feet; you have diabetes (diabetic foot management during pregnancy requires extra vigilance); you notice significant arch collapse or new flat feet; or pain persists after delivery. Balance Foot & Ankle (810-206-1402) is experienced in treating pregnant patients safely, focusing on conservative non-pharmacological treatments appropriate for pregnancy.
What is the safest treatment for foot pain during pregnancy?
Safe pregnancy foot pain management includes: supportive footwear with good arch support, custom orthotics (safe and highly effective), compression socks (15–20 mmHg) for swelling, foot elevation when resting, gentle calf stretching, and ice for acute pain. Balance Foot & Ankle treats pregnant patients with these conservative approaches.
Can I wear orthotics during pregnancy?
Yes. Custom orthotics are completely safe during pregnancy and highly beneficial for managing the arch collapse and plantar fasciitis that pregnancy causes. They accommodate the foot changes of pregnancy while providing necessary support. Balance Foot & Ankle frequently prescribes orthotics for pregnant patients from our Howell and Bloomfield Township offices.
Will my feet stay bigger after pregnancy?
Many women find their feet remain permanently wider and sometimes longer after pregnancy due to ligament laxity causing permanent arch flattening. About 60–70% of women experience some permanent foot size change. If your arches have flattened, custom orthotics provide long-term support for post-pregnancy flat feet.
