Why Shoe Blisters Form
Shoe bite blisters form through repetitive shear stress on skin — friction from a shoe edge moves the superficial skin layer against the deeper dermis, generating heat and tearing apart the connective tissue bridges between the layers. Fluid accumulates in the space created (a seroma), forming the blister roof over the raw dermis below. This is why the blister base is so tender — it’s exposed dermis.
High-risk locations: the posterior heel (back of shoe counter), the 5th toe lateral surface (shoe side wall), and any bony prominence the shoe contacts during gait. New shoes and shoes worn for an unusually long time (races, long hikes) are the most common precipitants.
Treatment Protocol
