More questions patients ask
What is vitamin K2 and why is it different from vitamin K1?
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is found in leafy greens and primarily involved in blood clotting (in the liver). Vitamin K2 (menaquinone — MK-4 and MK-7 forms) is found in fermented foods and animal products, and primarily directs calcium to bones and removes it from arteries — working in conjunction with vitamin D3. K2 activates osteocalcin (bone protein) and matrix Gla protein (arterial protection protein). For bone health relevant to foot fractures and osteoporosis, K2 is far more important than K1. Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell (4330 E Grand River) and Bloomfield Township (43494 Woodward Ave #208) discusses bone health — call (810) 206-1402.
What foods are rich in vitamin K2?
Best vitamin K2 food sources: natto (Japanese fermented soybeans — highest K2 content by far, especially MK-7), hard cheeses (gouda, brie, edam), soft cheeses, egg yolks (pasture-raised hens highest), dark chicken meat, chicken liver, pork, and certain fermented dairy (kefir, some yogurts). Western diets are frequently low in K2 since food processing destroys it. Supplementation with MK-7 (100–200 mcg/day) is practical for most people. Balance Foot & Ankle recommends a diet rich in fermented foods and quality animal products for patients with bone health concerns.
Can vitamin D3 supplements cause problems without K2?
High-dose vitamin D3 supplementation without K2 may theoretically increase calcium absorption beyond what bones can absorb, potentially contributing to soft tissue calcification. Some research suggests vitamin D supplementation without K2 may increase arterial calcification risk and could contribute to kidney stones. The clinical significance in humans is debated, but the precautionary principle suggests taking D3 and K2 together is wise, especially at higher D3 doses (above 2,000 IU/day). Balance Foot & Ankle, serving Howell and Bloomfield Township, MI, advises on complete bone health protocols.
What is the best way to take vitamin D3, K2, magnesium, and calcium?
Optimal protocol: Take D3 with K2 (in the same supplement or together) with a fat-containing meal (both are fat-soluble). Take magnesium (glycinate form) with D3 since it's required for D3 activation. Take calcium (if needed) in split doses of no more than 500 mg at a time, with meals, separate from magnesium (they compete for absorption). Avoid calcium at bedtime (may affect sleep). Monitor with serum 25(OH)D testing. At Balance Foot & Ankle, we guide patients on bone health supplementation strategies relevant to preventing foot fractures — call (810) 206-1402.
How does vitamin K2 protect arteries and cardiovascular health?
Vitamin K2 activates matrix Gla protein (MGP), which is the most potent known inhibitor of arterial calcification. Without adequate K2 to activate MGP, calcium deposits accumulate in artery walls — contributing to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and cardiovascular disease. Adequate K2 keeps calcium in bones (where it belongs) and out of arteries. This is particularly relevant for foot health since peripheral artery disease (PAD) — hardened, narrowed arteries in the legs — is a serious complication causing poor circulation and foot wounds. Balance Foot & Ankle treats PAD-related foot conditions — call (810) 206-1402.
