Best Walking & Hiking Trails in Livingston County — A Foot Doctor’s Guide to Staying Active

Best Walking & Hiking Trails in Livingston County — A Foot Doctor’s Guide to Staying Active (Without Getting Hurt)

Livingston County is genuinely one of Michigan’s best outdoor destinations — lakes, forests, rail trails, and recreation areas within minutes of downtown Howell. As your local podiatrist, I want to help you enjoy every mile of it. Here are my trail reviews, with foot health tips for each.

Huron Valley Trail

Surface: Paved | Distance: 5+ miles | Difficulty: Easy

This paved trail is the most foot-friendly option in the county. Flat, even surface with excellent drainage. Ideal for patients recovering from plantar fasciitis, post-surgical patients returning to activity, and anyone with arthritis who needs a forgiving surface.

Foot health tip: Even on pavement, wear supportive shoes — not sandals. Hoka Bondi or Brooks Ghost are ideal for this surface.

Brighton Recreation Area

Surface: Mixed dirt, gravel, some paved | Distance: 10+ miles of trails | Difficulty: Moderate

Varied terrain with some hills. Excellent workout, but the uneven surfaces require proper ankle support — especially if you have a history of ankle sprains.

Foot health tip: Consider a lace-up ankle brace (McDavid 195) for lateral support on this terrain. Trail shoes with a firmer midsole (HOKA Speedgoat, Brooks Cascadia) are better here than road runners.

Island Lake Recreation Area

Surface: Natural — dirt, roots, varied terrain | Distance: 12+ miles | Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

Beautiful but technical terrain. Tree roots and sandy sections create unpredictable footing. High ankle sprain risk for trail runners and fast hikers.

Foot health tip: Trail shoes with ankle coverage recommended. Watch for root crossings at speed. If you’ve had a previous ankle sprain, prophylactic bracing is wise here.

Kensington Metropark

Surface: Paved bike paths + nature trails | Distance: 8+ miles paved | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

One of the most beautiful parks in Southeast Michigan. Paved trail circles the lake — excellent for walkers of all fitness levels. The nature trails add challenge and variety.

Foot health tip: Orthotic sandals (Vionic, Birkenstock) work for the paved path on warm days. For nature trails, switch to proper supportive shoes.

Lakelands Trail State Park

Surface: Crushed limestone (rail trail) | Distance: 13.7 miles | Difficulty: Easy

Rail trail format — flat, wide, consistent surface. Crushed limestone is joint-friendly and comfortable for most foot conditions. One of my personal favorites to recommend for post-injury return to walking.

Foot health tip: This trail is excellent for plantar fasciitis patients building back activity. Start with short segments, gradually increase distance, always wear orthotics.

When Trail Walking Causes Foot Pain — We Can Help

If you’ve been avoiding trails because of heel pain, ankle instability, or general foot pain — that’s exactly what we treat. Most of the conditions keeping people off trails are very treatable. Plantar fasciitis resolves with proper intervention. Ankle instability is correctable with orthotics and bracing. Foot pain from arthritis is manageable.

Don’t let foot pain take Michigan’s trails away from you.

Clinical Foot Care Beyond Products: Michigan’s Balance Foot & Ankle

Michigan patients using foot care products — wound care supplies, topical treatments, foot supplements, compression garments, orthotics, or stretching devices — as part of their foot health routine benefit from occasional clinical evaluation to ensure the products they are using are appropriate for their specific condition and that no developing pathology requires professional intervention. At Balance Foot & Ankle, our clinical evaluation confirms the diagnosis, assesses whether current product-based management is adequate, and identifies cases where professional treatment would produce better outcomes than continued self-management.

For Michigan patients managing chronic conditions — diabetic foot care, neuropathy management, post-surgical recovery, or persistent tendinopathy — regular podiatric check-ins at appropriate intervals ensure that small changes are caught before they become significant complications. The right interval varies by condition and risk level: high-risk diabetic patients benefit from quarterly visits; stable patients using products for minor chronic conditions may need only annual check-ins. At Balance Foot & Ankle, we help patients identify the appropriate visit frequency for their specific situation. Livingston and Oakland County patients can call (810) 206-1402 to schedule at our Howell or Bloomfield Hills office.
