Cold Feet That Won’t Warm Up — When It’s More Than Just Michigan Winter

Cold Feet in Michigan: Normal or a Warning Sign?

Michigan winters are brutal, and cold feet are part of life from November through March. But what about cold feet that won’t warm up even when you’re inside? Or feet that feel cold year-round, even in summer? At Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell, we see this complaint regularly — and in many cases, it signals a real vascular problem that needs attention.

When Cold Feet Are Normal

Temporary cold feet from actual cold exposure are normal. Your body constricts blood vessels in the extremities to maintain core temperature — feet and hands are the first to get cold and the last to warm up. This is a healthy physiological response. Cold feet that warm up when you come inside, put on warm socks, or move around are generally nothing to worry about.

When Cold Feet Signal a Problem

Cold feet become a medical concern when they persist despite being in a warm environment, don’t warm up with socks or movement, are accompanied by color changes (pale, blue, or bright red), occur alongside numbness or tingling, are paired with slow-healing wounds, involve one foot significantly colder than the other, or are associated with leg cramping when walking.

Common Medical Causes of Persistently Cold Feet

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) reduces blood flow through narrowed arteries — the feet receive less warm blood. Raynaud’s disease causes blood vessels to over-respond to cold, dramatically restricting flow. Diabetic neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy can alter temperature perception — feet may feel cold even when they’re not, or may fail to perceive warmth. Hypothyroidism slows metabolism and reduces peripheral circulation. Anemia reduces oxygen delivery to tissues. Venous insufficiency, though usually associated with warmth and swelling, can sometimes cause temperature irregularities.
