A diabetic patient with peripheral neuropathy cannot feel shoe pressure. Standard shoes with seams, tight toe boxes, and inflexible uppers create pressure points that cause blisters and ulcerations the patient never feels — which then go untreated and progress to serious infections. Every component of diabetic shoe design addresses one of these specific risk factors.
Essential Features of Diabetic Shoes
Extra depth: At least 3/8″ additional volume compared to standard shoes — provides space for custom insoles without creating upper pressure. Seamless interior: Eliminates friction points that cause blisters; the interior lining should be smooth and soft. Wide and deep toe box: Accommodates hammertoes, bunions, and digits prone to deformity without compression. Soft, adjustable upper: Stretch materials or Velcro closures accommodate swelling and reduce pressure points.
