If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you have health insurance coverage for podiatric care. The specific coverage depends on how long you’ve been on disability and whether you receive Medicare, Medicaid, or both.

SSDI and Medicare

If you’ve been receiving SSDI for 24 months, you automatically become eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B. This gives you the same podiatric coverage as seniors on Medicare — including coverage for all medically necessary foot and ankle care, and enhanced coverage if you have a qualifying condition like diabetes or neuropathy.

SSI and Medicaid

SSI recipients are typically automatically enrolled in Michigan Medicaid (including the Healthy Michigan Plan). Medicaid covers medically necessary podiatric services, typically with minimal or no copay.

Dual Eligibility (Medicare + Medicaid)
