Medically reviewed by Dr. Tom Biernacki, DPM — Board-certified foot & ankle surgeon, 3,000+ surgeries performed. Updated April 2026 with current clinical evidence. This article reflects real practice experience from Balance Foot & Ankle Specialists in Howell and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Quick Answer
Most foot and ankle problems respond to conservative care — proper footwear, supportive inserts, activity modification, and targeted stretching — within 4-8 weeks. Persistent pain beyond that window, or any symptom that prevents walking, warrants a podiatric evaluation to rule out fracture, tendon tear, or systemic cause.

Michigan High School Sports Foot Injury Prevention Guide
Keeping Michigan Student Athletes on the Field
High school sports foot injuries are one of the most frustrating things I treat – because the vast majority are preventable. A student athlete who misses games due to plantar fasciitis, Sever disease, or Achilles issues often could have stayed healthy with the right footwear and insoles from the start of the season.
Michigan High School Athletic Season Calendar
Fall (August-November): football, soccer, cross country, volleyball. Winter (November-March): basketball, wrestling, swimming, indoor track. Spring (March-June): baseball, softball, track and field, lacrosse, tennis. Each season brings different foot demands – cleats, court shoes, running shoes – and each type of shoe has different insole needs.
The Most Common High School Foot Injuries
Sever disease (calcaneal apophysitis): heel pain in growing athletes ages 9-14. The growth plate at the back of the heel is vulnerable during rapid growth spurts. This is the #1 foot complaint I see in young Michigan athletes. Treatment: heel cups, PowerStep insoles, activity modification during flares. Plantar fasciitis in athletes: increasingly common in high school-age runners and court sport athletes. Often develops when athletes dramatically increase training volume at the start of the season. Stress fractures: second metatarsal stress fractures are common in track and cross country athletes who overtrain. Ankle sprains: most common sports injury overall – proper footwear and insoles reduce recurrence risk.
Insoles for High School Athletes
Gold #1: Curex RunPro – [AFFILIATE LINK – Curex RunPro] – For running and field sports. Dynamic arch support that works with athletic movement. Fits in running shoes, court shoes, and many cleats. The three arch height options cover the variety of foot types in young athletes.
Silver #2: PowerStep PULSE – [AFFILIATE LINK – PowerStep PULSE] – For athletes who need more rigid motion control. Especially good for basketball and court sports players with overpronation or prior ankle instability.
Local Michigan Schools We Serve
We provide athletic foot care for student athletes throughout Southeast Michigan, including Brighton, Howell, Hartland, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Rochester, and surrounding communities. We work with athletic trainers and coaches to keep Michigan athletes on the field.
Parent Action Plan
At the start of each season: inspect your student athlete’s shoes (replace if over 400 miles or 12 months old), add appropriate insoles, watch for morning stiffness or pain during warmup, and do not let athletes push through significant foot pain. Early treatment means shorter recovery time.

Michigan High School Sports Foot Injuries: The Most Common, the Most Missed, and the Most Serious
Michigan high school athletics are played at high intensity — the state’s competitive sports culture, combined with year-round training expectations in most varsity programs, creates training volumes that expose young athletes to overuse injuries at rates that were uncommon in previous generations of less intensively trained high school athletes. The most common foot and ankle injuries in Michigan high school sports: lateral ankle sprains (the most common athletic injury period — affecting soccer, basketball, and volleyball players most frequently); Sever’s disease in 10–14-year-old athletes whose calcaneal growth plate is vulnerable to the traction injury of high calf tension during periods of rapid growth; stress fractures in cross-country and track athletes whose seasonal mileage increases exceed bone remodeling capacity; and turf toe in football players with excessive first MTP hyperextension on artificial turf.
The most missed diagnoses in Michigan high school athletes: Lisfranc ligament injuries initially interpreted as “midfoot sprain” — the subtle diastasis visible only on weight-bearing AP foot X-ray that, if missed, allows the unstable Lisfranc complex to continue loading with each practice until a ligamentous injury becomes a fracture-dislocation requiring surgical fixation; Jones fractures (zone 2 fifth metatarsal) that are returned to play too early after a period of protected weight-bearing without confirming X-ray evidence of adequate bridging callus — the zone 2 fracture’s watershed vascularity creates a refracture risk that delays return-to-sport compared to zone 1 avulsion injuries; and navicular stress fractures whose initial X-ray is negative, leading to “ankle sprain” diagnosis when MRI or bone scan would identify the stress reaction requiring immediate non-weight-bearing. At Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell and Bloomfield Hills, we evaluate Michigan high school athletes with the sports medicine standard that collegiate athletes receive — weight-bearing imaging, appropriate advanced imaging when clinical suspicion warrants, and sport-specific return-to-play criteria.
