Self-Pay Rates at Balance Foot & Ankle

We treat many patients who come in without insurance — whether they’re between jobs, self-employed, on a high-deductible plan where their deductible hasn’t been met, or simply haven’t enrolled in a plan. Our office provides transparent self-pay pricing so you know what your visit will cost before you arrive. There are no hidden fees or surprise billing at self-pay rates.

• New patient visit (comprehensive evaluation): $175 — includes history, physical examination, biomechanical assessment, and treatment plan discussion
• Established patient / follow-up visit: $125 — progress check and treatment adjustment
• X-rays (foot or ankle, in-office): $100-150 per set — we have digital X-ray in both offices
• Cortisone injection: $150-200 — includes the injection medication, procedure, and follow-up guidance
• Custom orthotics: $425-550 per pair — includes casting, laboratory fabrication, and fitting appointment
• Nail procedures (ingrown nail removal, debridement): $150-200 depending on complexity

All self-pay pricing is provided upfront. If you need additional services not listed above, we’ll provide an estimate before proceeding — you will never be surprised by a bill for something you didn’t consent to in advance.

Payment Options for Uninsured Patients

We accept a range of payment methods to make care accessible regardless of insurance status. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) are accepted at both locations. HSA and FSA cards are accepted — podiatry visits, custom orthotics, and most procedures qualify as HSA/FSA-eligible medical expenses. CareCredit healthcare financing is available for patients who need to spread payments for larger expenses like orthotics or procedures — ask our front desk for the CareCredit application. Check and cash are accepted. We do not currently offer in-house payment plans, but CareCredit provides financing options from 6 to 24 months depending on the amount financed.

What to Expect at Your Self-Pay Visit

Self-pay patients receive identical clinical care to insured patients — the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations don’t differ based on payment method. When you call to schedule, let us know you’ll be paying self-pay so we can confirm the current rates and answer any cost questions before your appointment. At the appointment, you’ll be asked for payment at check-out after your visit is complete. If during the visit Dr. Biernacki recommends additional services (X-rays, an injection, a nail procedure), you’ll be informed of the cost before we proceed — you can decide whether to proceed at that appointment or schedule separately. We can also provide you with an itemized receipt for HSA reimbursement or tax purposes.

Getting Insurance Coverage for Podiatry

If you’re currently uninsured and considering enrollment, podiatry is covered under most Michigan marketplace plans (purchased through healthcare.gov during open enrollment, or during a special enrollment period if you’ve had a qualifying life event). Michigan Medicaid (Healthy Michigan Plan) also covers podiatry visits when medically necessary. If you’re self-employed or your employer doesn’t offer health insurance, the individual marketplace may have affordable options — particularly if your income qualifies for premium tax credits. Calling the Michigan Insurance Marketplace at 1-877-543-4063 or visiting michigan.gov/difs can help you identify options. In the meantime, we’re glad to see you on a self-pay basis until coverage is in place.

You can pay with your HSA or FSA debit card directly at our office. We can also provide an itemized receipt for reimbursement if you prefer to submit to your HSA administrator manually.
