More questions patients ask
What is turf toe and what causes it?
Turf toe is a sprain of the main joint of the big toe — the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint — caused by hyperextension (bending too far upward). It commonly occurs in athletes playing on artificial turf or hard surfaces. The injury damages the joint capsule and ligaments. Balance Foot & Ankle evaluates and treats turf toe at our Howell and Bloomfield Township offices. Call (810) 206-1402.
How long does turf toe take to heal?
Mild turf toe (Grade 1): 1–2 weeks. Moderate (Grade 2): 2–6 weeks. Severe (Grade 3): 3–6 months. Return to sport depends on grade and position demands. Balance Foot & Ankle provides accurate grade assessment and sport-specific return-to-activity timelines for athletes with turf toe injuries.
How is turf toe treated?
Treatment includes RICE initially, then rigid-soled shoes or orthotics with a first ray extension (Morton's extension) to limit big toe extension, taping, and physical therapy. Grade 3 injuries may require surgical repair. Balance Foot & Ankle provides comprehensive turf toe management from first-responder care through return to sport.
Can turf toe become chronic?
Yes — inadequately treated turf toe can progress to hallux rigidus (big toe arthritis), chronic joint instability, or sesamoid problems. Proper treatment and adequate healing time before return to sport prevents these long-term complications. Contact Balance Foot & Ankle at (810) 206-1402 for prompt turf toe evaluation and treatment.
