Free guide from a foot and ankle surgeon
What’s Worth It is a free 24-page companion to Keep Walking After 50. Board-certified foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Tom Biernacki grades 26 walking trends, 16 treatments (including the two machines in his own offices) and the supplement aisle on the evidence, with every source listed.
- Toe spacers, weighted vests, walking pads, Japanese walking, recovery sandals and more, each with a plain grade and who it is wrong for.
- Shockwave, laser, injections, custom orthotics and minimally invasive surgery, graded as the trials read, not as the ads read.
- Eight things the internet told you about your feet, answered in a paragraph each.
- Pickleball without the pop: the injuries to watch for, and why a court shoe beats a running shoe.

A look inside

Graded the way a skeptical surgeon would grade them
Every trend and treatment gets one plain grade, from “try it” to “skip,” with the research behind it and the people it is wrong for. Where the evidence is thin, the guide says so, including for treatments Dr. Tom’s own practice offers.
From Dr. Tom Biernacki, DPM, FACFAS

Board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and founder of Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell and Bloomfield Township, Michigan. On the Michigan Foot Doctors YouTube channel, which has more than 950,000 subscribers, he explains foot problems in plain language. This guide is what he tells patients over 50 who want to keep walking: the evidence, graded honestly, including for treatments his own practice offers.
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. It is the guide Dr. Tom wishes every patient had read before their first visit.
Is this medical advice?
No. It is general education. Your own conditions and medicines decide what fits you, and page 4 of What’s Worth It tells you which symptoms should not wait for a guide.
I don’t live in Michigan. Is it still useful?
Yes. It was written for anyone over 50 who walks. A few pages are about the Michigan offices; everything else travels.
Do you sell anything in it?
The guide names shoes and insoles Dr. Tom recommends, and the practice earns a commission if you buy through the product links on its website. The guide says so wherever it matters, no brand paid to be in it, and it tells you who each product is wrong for.
Where do I start if my feet hurt now?
With the free Starter Guide, Keep Walking After 50: it helps you find which of six walking-pain patterns you have and what to do first.

Please read: general education, not medical advice. Call 911 for a foot or leg that suddenly turns cold, pale or very painful, or leg swelling with chest pain or trouble breathing. Get seen the same day for sudden swelling or pain in one calf, a new wound, or a foot that is red, swollen or hot to the touch if you have diabetes or numb feet. Downloading the guide does not make you a patient.
Paid links: the practice earns a commission if you buy through product links on its websites, as an Amazon Associate and through brand programs. The guides contain no affiliate links; some shop and review pages they point to do.
