For patients returning to sport after a Grade 2 lateral ankle sprain, this is my first recommendation. It is also the most commonly used brace in NCAA athletic training rooms.

Best for Chronic Instability / High-Performance: Zamst A2-DX
The Zamst A2-DX provides the highest level of support available in a lace-up brace format, with dual exoskeletal straps that target the ATFL and CFL — the two ligaments most commonly injured in lateral ankle sprains. Used by professional athletes and patients with documented ligament laxity on stress X-ray or MRI. If you have recurrent sprains on the same ankle despite using a standard lace-up brace, the A2-DX is the appropriate upgrade. It is bulkier than the ASO and requires a half-size larger shoe.

Best Hinged Brace / Post-Operative: DonJoy Velocity
The DonJoy Velocity is the standard hinged ankle brace used in post-surgical rehabilitation and high-grade acute sprains. The most common mistake: treating the brace as the treatment. An ankle brace is a tool for safe return to activity while rehabilitation is occurring — not a destination. The correct approach: wear the ASO or A2-DX for sport, perform peroneal strengthening (band resistance exercises, heel raises on declined board) and balance training (single-leg stance, BAPS board, progressively challenging surfaces) 3× per week, and progressively wean off the brace as strength and proprioception normalize. The goal is a structurally stable ankle that does not require external support for normal activities.

When to See a Podiatrist Instead of Self-Treating
