Best Brace for Posterior tibial tendinitis
Flexor hallucis longus tendonitis can mimic posterior tibial tendonitis.

What is posterior tibial tendonitis?

Posterior tibial tendonitis is one of the most common foot and ankle problems that we see. It generally occurs on the inside of the ankle, extending along the inside of the heel. This can occur when the posterior tibial tendon becomes inflamed and potentially develops a partial tear and more severe circumstances.
As a result, the tendon may cause the foot to flatten out and provide poor stability and poor support for the arch of the foot. This can eventually lead to flat feet.

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis Treatment Overview:

In our experience, most patients can fix posterior tibial tendonitis without surgery.
For this reason, we are big fans of using the best posterior tibial tendonitis braces and the best posterior tibial tendinitis orthotics.
Orthotics are generally the first-line treatment combined with great posterior tibial tendonitis shoes. But if this does not help, a posterior tibial tendonitis brace can be added.
In our experience, these 3 treatments are extremely effective. For a partial tear, it is possible to use a walking boot in the short term.
We will talk about these treatment options below.

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis Anatomy:

Posterior tibial tendonitis is 1 of the most important tendons that we know of in the foot and ankle. The tendon starts inside the calf muscle and extends onto the inside medial portion of the foot.
The main function of the posterior tibial tendon is to support the foot arch while walking.

Causes Posterior tibial tendonitis:

The most common causes of posterior tibial tendonitis are aware and care injury. This type of inflammation can occur most commonly due to overuse.
For example, this is very common in people that perform high-impact sports such as running, basketball, tennis, soccer, or other types of running activities.
This can lead to the tendon’s inflammation and eventually a partial tear or even a complete tear.
If this happens repetitively, the arch will slowly collapse over time and become injured.
Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is much more common in women and people over 40 years old.

Risk factors for posterior tibial tendinitis:

Risk factors include high-impact activities.
Sports include running or jumping.
Obesity.
Diabetes.
High blood pressure.
Jobs that include long-term standing and high activity.

Symptoms for posterior tibial tendonitis:

The most common symptoms of posterior tibial tendonitis include pain along the inside of the foot and ankle where the tendon is present.
This is usually associated with swelling on the inside of the ankle.
The pain is worse with activity, especially high-impact activity such as running or jumping.
In more severe cases, patients can have a hard time walking or standing for extended periods of time.
There is usually pain on the outside of the ankle when the foot collapses.
This is called overpronation. Excellent, we provide a guide for overpronation as well as posterior tibial tendonitis.

Amazing brace. Best reviews and best fit. This is the Ferrari of braces if you can afford it.
This is a very highly rated, great reviewed brace. The support and stability is top notch for athletics. Very durable and does it’s job.
Amazing reviews with proven track record. This is very soft and supportive in your shoe.
Cons:
The only downside besides cost, is complexity. This brace must be left or right. Not interchangeable. It is also for post-injury situations and good support. Not for compression!
The brace may be a little too big for a more snug shoe. This requires some room to fit and would be the main complaint. Hard interface along the padding.
The main downside is the durability and the ability for the material to give out. Great at first but maybe 3-4 months of continuous use prior to failure.
Important Tips:
Make sure to choose left vs. right. This is a high level brace mean specifically for injury support. This is not for compression or non-injury situations. It will be too tight.
This is a fantastic and supportive brace. Just make sure that your shoe will have some room for it to fit. Most good running shoes should let it fit.
This is an excellent starter brace if you have never had a brace before. It is a little longer to put with the straps and laces.

Overview:
This is The Top Level Brace – Does Compression, Support & Great Fit.
This brace attempts mild compression and mild support.
Pros:
Excellent brace: Best overall mix of compression & support, and it still fits in most shoes! If you have a chronic injury and need to wear normal shoes => This is the BEST CHOICE.
Good rating at 4.3 with 2,000 reviews. It is cost effective and gives some support with some compression. Does both ok, but excellent when price is factored in.
Cons:
Expensive. It doesn’t do any single thing the best. There are cheaper and more supportive braces, there are cheaper and more compressive braces. But no braces combine the two and still fit in a shoe.
Does not really do anything well. Weak support and not the best compression. Meant as an assist for chronic pain and low activity. Not for an acute injury.
Important Tips:
This is a high durability brace for everyday use. If you have chronic arthritis or pain with a high need for activity, this is your brace to use! **Gel inside seems to deteriorate after daily washing at about 1 year old**
This is mean for lower activity and better fit than a true supportive brace. Don’t use this for an acute sprain or injury.

Posterior tibial tendonitis treatment:

What Will Happen if Posterior Tibial Tendonitis Is Left Untreated?

PTTD is usually a progressive condition, meaning that it will often get worse if left untreated and unsupported. When left untreated, the arch will flatten further, and the foot and arch will begin to turn outward as the ankle rolls inward. After this, the tendon will continue to deteriorate, leading to arthritis, further pain, and a heavily disrupted walking pattern.

How Can a Posterior Tibial Tendonitis Brace Help?

Luckily, ankle braces and taping are effective in treating PTTD for most cases, as long as the condition is treated at an early enough stage. A PTTD brace will help support the foot’s arch, accounting for different arch shapes and heights to make sure the condition doesn’t develop any further and your pain regresses. With the use of a PTTD brace, your walking pattern will normalize, and the symptoms of posterior tibial tendonitis can be kept at bay.

Arch support can reduce posterior tibial tendinitis pain:

While you should always consult your doctor before deciding how to treat your PTTD, these braces are an excellent choice for early treatment in most cases. If you’d like to view our other products that can help with your posterior tibial tendonitis and adult-acquired flat feet, feel free to browse our entire section of Insoles for Flat Feet.

Please note: PTTD is a progressive condition and must be recognized early for a PTTD brace to be a sufficient treatment. Consult your physician to determine the best course of action to treat your posterior tibial tendonitis.
