Should I wear an ankle brace all the time after a sprain?

During the first 6 weeks post-sprain, yes — whenever standing or walking. After that, taper to activity-only wear. Wearing a brace 24/7 for months causes muscle atrophy and makes the instability worse.

Can a brace replace physical therapy?

No. A brace manages the mechanical problem; PT rebuilds the strength and proprioception that prevents re-injury. Both, not either/or.

Are custom braces covered by insurance?

Usually yes, with proper diagnosis coding (L4398 for the Arizona AFO, L3170 for ankle-foot orthoses). Medicare, BCBS, and most commercial plans cover them when clinically indicated.

How long does a good brace last?

ASO and A60: 6–12 months heavy athletic use, 2–3 years occasional. Arizona AFO: 3–5 years. Fabric compression sleeves: 3–6 months. Night splints: 1–2 years.

Can I sleep in an ankle brace?

Not recommended — circulation is already reduced when lying down, and a tight brace can cause numbness. Exception: acute grade 2 sprain in the first 3–5 nights, with the brace loosened.

What’s the difference between a brace and a CAM boot?

A brace supports — a boot immobilizes. Boots are for fractures, post-surgery, severe Achilles tears, Charcot — not for chronic pain or mild sprains. Never self-prescribe a CAM boot.

Can I wear an ankle brace in a dress shoe?

Low-profile braces like the Aircast A60 and Bauerfeind MalleoTrain fit in most roomy dress shoes. ASO and McDavid don’t. Buy your shoes a half-size larger if you need daily brace wear.

Do I need a prescription to buy these braces?

No — all the OTC braces here are sold without prescription. Custom braces (Arizona AFO custom-casted, Richie Brace) require a podiatrist or orthotist.
