1. Soaking Feet in Listerine + Vinegar (MIXED — Limited Evidence)

You’ve seen it everywhere: feet soaked in blue Listerine and white vinegar peeling off dead skin in sheets. The peeling part is real — the thymol in Listerine is antifungal and the acid in vinegar softens keratin. But it’s not treating anything medically. For toenail fungus, it’s too weak to penetrate the nail plate. For calluses, a pumice stone works better and faster. Verdict: harmless novelty, not medical treatment.

2. Barefoot Shoes / “Caveman Running” (PARTLY REAL)

The theory that barefoot or minimalist shoes strengthen feet has some legitimate scientific support. The problem is the transition. Most adults have spent decades in supportive footwear — their intrinsic foot muscles are weak. Going straight to barefoot running causes stress fractures. Done correctly with a 6–12 month gradual transition, minimalist shoes can improve foot strength. Done as a sudden switch, they cause injury. See my barefoot shoes guide.

3. Wearing Toe Spacers All Day (MOSTLY GOOD)

Toe spacers have real clinical evidence behind them for bunion pain reduction and hallux valgus management. The TikTok trend of wearing them constantly is a reasonable extrapolation. My recommendation: start with 20–30 minutes daily and work up. They won’t reverse a bunion, but they reduce pain and may slow progression.

4. “Foot Mapping” Pressure Plates at Stores (REAL SCIENCE, OFTEN MISUSED)

Pressure mapping technology is real and used in clinical practice. The free foot scans at shoe stores use proprietary algorithms that tend to upsell you to their insoles regardless of what the scan shows. It’s a sales tool dressed as science. 5. “Grounding” / Earthing (WEAK EVIDENCE)

Walking barefoot on grass to absorb electrons from the earth. There are small studies suggesting benefits to inflammation and sleep, but they’re low-quality. Going barefoot on natural surfaces has real benefits (proprioception, intrinsic muscle strengthening) — those aren’t from electrons, they’re from biomechanics. Enjoy barefoot time on grass for the muscle benefits; the electron story is not proven.

6. Using Pumice Stones on Calluses (REAL — But With Caveats)

Pumice stones are legitimate and widely used in podiatry. The TikTok versions can go too far — some people are grinding until they bleed. Calluses have a protective function; removing too much creates wounds. For diabetics, any foot file use is contraindicated without podiatric supervision.

This one surprises people. A small NIH-funded study found that Vicks cleared or partially cleared toenail fungus in about 28% of participants. 8. DIY Ingrown Toenail “Hacks” (DON’T DO THIS)

Digging out ingrown toenails, stuffing cotton under the nail, cutting V-shapes into the nail — none of these work and all of them can introduce infection. If your ingrown toenail is infected (warm, red, draining), you need antibiotics and in-office treatment, not a TikTok hack.
