What Actually Matters in a Plantar Fasciitis Shoe
After seeing thousands of patients with plantar fasciitis in our Howell and Bloomfield Township clinics, I can tell you that the single most damaging footwear choice is barefoot walking on hard floors in the morning. The second most damaging is flat shoes with no arch support — ballet flats, flip flops, and minimalist shoes. The shoe features that actually reduce plantar fascia load:
Heel-to-toe drop of 6–10mm: A modest heel elevation puts the Achilles in a slightly shortened position, reducing the traction the tight Achilles places on the plantar fascia insertion. This is why a slight heel elevation relieves morning pain — not high heels, just a moderate lift.
Rigid midfoot shank: If you can fold a shoe in half at the arch, it provides no arch support. The plantar fascia needs the shoe to stay stiff through midstance. Press the forefoot toward the heel — the shoe should resist this motion significantly.
Firm heel counter: The heel counter controls rearfoot motion. Excessive heel roll (pronation) increases plantar fascia tension with every step. A firm heel counter minimizes this. Press the back of the shoe inward — it should be stiff, not collapsible.
Removable insole: The stock insoles in even good shoes are often flat foam that compresses within weeks. A removable insole means you can add a quality orthotic (PowerStep Pinnacle is my standard recommendation for mild-to-moderate plantar fasciitis — $40–50, made by a podiatrist-founded company). The combination of a good shoe + quality insole outperforms either alone.
What to Avoid
Zero-drop shoes (flat sole, heel same height as toe) maximize Achilles and plantar fascia tension. They are appropriate for healthy feet with no fascia pathology — not for active plantar fasciitis. Flip flops, slides, and backless sandals allow the foot to grip with the toes each step, activating the flexor tendons and further loading the fascia. Worn-out sneakers where the midsole has collapsed — the cushioning compresses permanently, and the arch support fails months before the shoe looks worn out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear heels with plantar fasciitis? Low heels (1–2 inches, block style) are tolerable and sometimes even helpful. Stilettos concentrate all weight on the forefoot and destabilize the rearfoot. Completely flat shoes are typically worse than a low heel during active plantar fasciitis.
