Quick Answer — The Podiatrist’s Recovery Kit

For most foot pain, recovery comes down to three levers: topical anti-inflammatory, targeted mechanical release, and overnight stretching. My number-one pick for topical relief is Doctor Hoy’s Arnica Boost because it combines menthol’s cooling effect with arnica’s clinically-studied anti-inflammatory action without the skin irritation I see with old-school Biofreeze. For mechanical release, a dense foam roller (TriggerPoint GRID) plus a lacrosse-style massage ball covers 95% of the plantar fascia, calf, and posterior chain work I prescribe. For overnight, the Strassburg Sock delivers a gentle sustained stretch that breaks the morning-heel-pain cycle of plantar fasciitis within 2–3 weeks in most of my patients.

Every tool on this list I either use personally, dispense in my Howell clinic, or recommend to my own family — nothing here is here because it pays a commission.

Why these recommendations: I personally use the products on this page in my Howell and Bloomfield Hills clinics. When you buy through the links here, Balance Foot & Ankle earns a small commission at no cost to you — and it helps fund the free educational content I make on YouTube. I will never recommend a product I wouldn’t use on my own family.

#1 Overall BestDoctor’s Top Pick

Doctor Hoy’s Arnica Boost Pain Relief Gel

⭐ 4.8 · 15,000+ reviews
Why I rank it #1: Menthol cools within 30 seconds for that instant “the pain is gone” feeling; arnica montana and MSM work on the actual inflammation over the following 2–4 hours. I’ve watched this gel replace Biofreeze in three of my partner clinics because patients report less skin irritation and longer relief. Paraben-free, gluten-free, not tested on animals. The 12-oz pump bottle is what I stock in clinic.
Format: Roll-on, tube, and pump
Active: Menthol + Arnica + MSM
Duration: 2–4 hours per application
Best for: Plantar fasciitis, arch soreness, post-run recovery
✓ Pros
  • Cools + anti-inflames in one product
  • No greasy residue, dries in 2 min
  • Stacks with icing, stretching, or massage
  • Made in the USA, paraben-free
✗ Cons
  • Strong menthol scent (mask or use at home)
  • Not safe on broken skin
  • Pricier than generic Biofreeze
Not ideal if: you have menthol sensitivity or are pregnant — ask your doctor first.
#2 Best Portable Percussive

Theragun Mini (Percussive Massage Gun)

⭐ 4.7 · 18,000+ reviews
Why it’s here: Handheld percussive therapy at 2,400 PPM breaks up trigger points in the soleus and gastrocnemius — the two muscles most commonly driving chronic heel pain. 2 lb, fits in a gym bag, 150-min battery. I use the mini on my own calves daily and it’s the device I recommend for patients who won’t commit to a full-size gun.
Speeds: 3 (1750 / 2100 / 2400 PPM)
Weight: 1.43 lb
Battery: ~150 min runtime
Best for: Calf trigger points, plantar fascia, general recovery
✓ Pros
  • Travel-sized and quiet
  • Durable Therabody motor
  • Quick 10-min recovery sessions
✗ Cons
  • Only one attachment head
  • No app integration
  • Less depth than full-size gun
Not ideal if: you need deep glute or hamstring work — consider Theragun Pro instead.

⭐ 4.5 · 9,500+ reviews
Why it’s here: The #1 evidence-based non-rigid night splint for plantar fasciitis. It keeps the plantar fascia gently stretched at 5° dorsiflexion while you sleep, which is what stops the brutal first-step morning pain. In my clinic, I pair it with PowerStep Pinnacle insoles and most patients are 80% better in 3 weeks.

Sizing: Small / Medium / Large
Fit: One-size-stretches, calf strap adjustable

  • Measure around the widest part of your calf, just below the knee; if close to 16″, we recommend sizing up to Large for best comfort.

  • Soft, Breathable Material – Made from lightweight, breathable knit fabric that’s comfortable against the skin and designed for all-night wear without irritation
  • Recommended Use – Start by wearing the sock for 1–2 hours while relaxing or before bed to get used to the stretch; gradually increase to overnight wear as tolerated to reduce discomfort
  • Designed to reach from the foot to just below the kneecap—ensuring consistent nightly stretch along the calf and plantar fascia

How I Built This List

These 12 tools aren’t pulled from a generic affiliate database. Each one is something I personally use, dispense in my Howell clinic, or prescribe to my own family. The ranking accounts for:

  • Clinical evidence — does the literature support its use for foot pain recovery?
  • Real-world durability — do patients come back saying it broke in a month?
  • Patient compliance — will people actually use it consistently enough to benefit?
  • Cost-per-recovery — is the price reasonable relative to the alternatives?
  • Compatibility with treatment — does it layer with the insoles, stretching, and clinical care I prescribe?

I update this list whenever I find a product that outperforms one of my current picks. Last reviewed: April 19, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I use a foam roller on my calves each day?

I recommend 2 minutes per calf, once or twice daily. Roll from ankle to knee with slow 1-inch passes, pausing on tender spots for 20–30 seconds. Don’t roll directly on the Achilles tendon itself — stay in the muscle belly above it.

Can I use a Theragun on my plantar fascia directly?

Yes, but keep it moving and use the softest attachment. The plantar fascia is thin tissue on top of bone — static pressure can bruise. I prefer percussive therapy on the calves, which drive most plantar fascia tension, rather than the fascia itself.

Do compression socks actually help with foot recovery?

For patients who stand all day, fly frequently, or run high mileage, yes. 20–30 mmHg graduated compression reduces end-of-day swelling and speeds lactate clearance. For sedentary patients, the benefit is minimal.

What’s the difference between the Strassburg Sock and a night splint?

A traditional night splint is a rigid boot that holds the ankle at 90°. The Strassburg Sock is a soft nylon sleeve that holds the toes in 5° dorsiflexion — much more tolerable for sleep. Clinically, both work; compliance is much higher with the sock.

How often should I replace recovery tools like foam rollers?

A good foam roller (TriggerPoint GRID) should last 3–5 years of daily use. Replace when the foam starts compressing permanently or the surface texture wears smooth.

Can I combine an Epsom salt soak with icing?

Not at the same time. Do warm Epsom soaks for relaxation, ice separately for acute inflammation. If you soak right before bed and ice in the morning, you’ll get both benefits.
