Back to School Shoes: A Podiatrist’s Guide for Parents (2026)
The Most Important Shoe Purchase of the Year
Back to school shoe shopping is one of the highest-impact decisions parents make for their children’s foot health. Kids wear school shoes 6-8 hours per day, 180 days per year. The right shoe prevents foot problems. The wrong shoe causes them. Here is what I tell every parent who walks into my clinic before August.
What to Look for in a School Shoe
Firm heel counter: squeeze the back of the shoe – it should not collapse. You need structure to support the heel. Flexible forefoot: the shoe should bend at the ball of foot, not the middle of the arch. Proper length: thumb-width between the longest toe and the end of the shoe, measured while standing. Wide toe box: toes should not be compressed laterally. Removable insole: allows you to add arch support if needed. Fastening system: laces or adjustable strap – slip-ons do not provide adequate heel retention for active kids.
The Insole Upgrade for School Shoes
Most children’s school shoes come with thin foam insoles that are adequate for casual use but not for 8 hours of standing and activity. If your child is on their feet all day in school or has any flat feet or arch complaints, add: PowerStep Pinnacle Kids – [AFFILIATE LINK – PowerStep Pinnacle Kids] – for structured support in school athletic shoes, or Curex WorkPro – [AFFILIATE LINK – Curex WorkPro] – if your child is very active and needs dynamic support.
Best School Shoe Brands by Age
Ages 5-8: New Balance 680 (wide options available), Stride Rite Made2Play (flexible for younger feet), Saucony Cohesion. Ages 9-14: New Balance 990 or Fresh Foam, Brooks Ghost or Adrenaline, ASICS GT-1000. For girls in dress shoes for school: Dansko Mary Janes, Stride Rite Mollie – prioritize arch support over fashion.
Red Flags While Shoe Shopping
Avoid: shoes that twist in the middle (no midfoot support), completely flat shoes with no arch whatsoever for kids over age 6, shoes with a steep heel-to-toe drop more than 10mm for young children, fashion sneakers that prioritize look over function.
When to See a Podiatrist
If your child complains of foot or leg pain regularly during or after school, trips or falls frequently, walks with an unusual gait, or has one foot visibly flatter than the other, schedule an evaluation before the school year starts.

A Podiatrist’s Back-to-School Shoe Fitting Guide: What the Fit Check Actually Involves
The back-to-school shoe fitting that matters most — the one that prevents the toenail trauma, blisters, and toe compression of an improperly fitted shoe — takes approximately five minutes and requires no special tools. The fit check components: (1) Length check: with the child standing (not sitting, as the foot lengthens under body weight), press your thumb into the toe box above the longest toe — a full thumb-width of space (approximately 1/2 inch) between the longest toe and the shoe tip accommodates normal toe splay and the forward slide that occurs during running; (2) Width check: the widest part of the shoe should align with the widest part of the foot — the metatarsal heads should not be compressed laterally by a narrow toe box; (3) Heel counter check: the heel should feel secure in the cup with minimal slippage during the simulated walking motion — a heel counter that collapses easily provides no rearfoot stability; (4) Flex point check: the shoe should flex where the foot flexes — at the metatarsophalangeal joints, not at the midfoot, where flexibility would allow arch collapse.
Common back-to-school shoe fitting mistakes: buying shoes with growth room that is too generous (more than 3/4 inch of toe room creates instability and allows the foot to slide forward, causing nail trauma); relying on the size from last year without checking current fit (children’s feet grow approximately one size every 4–6 months in the early school years and can grow faster during growth spurts); fitting shoes in the morning rather than the afternoon (feet swell throughout the day — shoes that fit perfectly at 9am may be tight by 3pm); and choosing shoes based on appearance rather than fit and function. At Balance Foot & Ankle in Howell and Bloomfield Hills, we see back-to-school foot evaluations for children with foot pain, abnormal gait, or parents who want a professional assessment of whether their child’s feet are developing normally.
