Spring Sandal Season Foot Prep — Your 30-Day Podiatrist Plan
Michigan winters are brutal on feet — months of heavy socks, boots, and dry indoor air leave feet dry, callused, and neglected. Here’s the step-by-step plan to get sandal-ready by May.
Week 1: Assessment & Foundation
Before treating anything, take an honest look at where you’re starting from. Check for: callus buildup on heels and balls of feet, any fungal nail discoloration (yellow, thickened, crumbling), dry or cracked skin especially on heels, any pain when you walk or stand.
Week 1 products:
- Foot file or pumice stone — gently remove initial callus buildup after soaking ($8–$12)
- Urea-based heel cream (O’Keeffe’s or Amlactin) — start hydrating cracked heels ($10–$15)
- Antifungal foot spray if any fungal signs ($10–$15)
Week 2: Nail Care & Fungus Treatment
Toenails that are discolored, thickened, or crumbling are the #1 reason people avoid sandals. A podiatrist can assess and treat in one appointment.
If nails look normal: Trim straight across with proper nail clippers, gently file edges, apply cuticle oil.
If you suspect fungus: OTC antifungal lacquer (ciclopirox) for mild cases, or call us for laser evaluation. Fungus will NOT clear up on its own — and it worsens each month.
Week 2 products: Nail trimming kit, tea tree cuticle oil, antifungal lacquer if needed.
Week 3: Callus Removal & Intensive Skin Care
After two weeks of moisturizing, calluses soften and are easier to remove. This is the week to do the real work.
Safe callus removal: Never cut calluses — use a pumice stone or electric callus remover on softened skin after soaking. Diabetics: call us for a medical pedicure instead.
Week 3 products:
- Electric callus remover (safer and faster than manual filing) — $30–$50
- Intensive heel treatment mask — $12–$18
- AmLactin or Eucerin foot cream for maximum hydration
Week 4: Sandal Selection & Support
The biggest mistake women make every spring: grabbing a flat flip flop with zero support. Here’s what actually matters in sandal selection:
- Arch support: Look for Vionic, Birkenstock, or Ecco sandals — all have built-in orthotic support
- Heel cup: Keeps your heel positioned correctly
- Adjustable straps: Custom fit prevents blisters
- Toe space: Adequate room for your toes without overlap
Top sandal picks we recommend: Vionic Tide II ($80–$100), Birkenstock Arizona ($110–$140), HOKA Ora Recovery Slide ($60–$80).
When to See Us Instead of DIY
Call us if you have:
- Stubborn fungal nails that haven’t responded to OTC treatments
- Painful calluses that keep coming back (often a structural issue requiring orthotics)
- Cracked heels that are bleeding or painful
- Any skin lesions, warts, or unusual spots on your feet
- Pain when walking — especially if it’s new
Our medical pedicure service is the ultimate sandal prep — professional nail care, callus treatment, and podiatric assessment in one appointment. Insurance often covers portions of this for at-risk patients.

Clinical Foot Care Beyond Products: Michigan’s Balance Foot & Ankle
Michigan patients using foot care products — wound care supplies, topical treatments, foot supplements, compression garments, orthotics, or stretching devices — as part of their foot health routine benefit from occasional clinical evaluation to ensure the products they are using are appropriate for their specific condition and that no developing pathology requires professional intervention. At Balance Foot & Ankle, our clinical evaluation confirms the diagnosis, assesses whether current product-based management is adequate, and identifies cases where professional treatment would produce better outcomes than continued self-management.
For Michigan patients managing chronic conditions — diabetic foot care, neuropathy management, post-surgical recovery, or persistent tendinopathy — regular podiatric check-ins at appropriate intervals ensure that small changes are caught before they become significant complications. The right interval varies by condition and risk level: high-risk diabetic patients benefit from quarterly visits; stable patients using products for minor chronic conditions may need only annual check-ins. At Balance Foot & Ankle, we help patients identify the appropriate visit frequency for their specific situation. Livingston and Oakland County patients can call (810) 206-1402 to schedule at our Howell or Bloomfield Hills office.
