Bunions and toe deformities change how your foot fits a shoe and how your weight moves through the front of the foot. Caught early, most are managed without surgery; left alone, they tend to progress. Use the guides below to identify what you are dealing with.
Common toe and big-toe problems
- Throbbing big-toe pain, especially at night — see what causes throbbing big-toe pain at night.
- Big-toe joint stiffness and arthritis — see how the big toe affects walking and big-toe joint fusion recovery.
- Turf toe and sprains of the big-toe joint — see turf toe and a sprained big-toe joint.
- Pain under the ball of the foot near the big toe — sesamoiditis; see how to tape for sesamoiditis.
- A broken big toe — see broken big toe.
Why these deformities happen
Bunions, hammertoes and related changes come from the way force is distributed across the forefoot — influenced by foot structure, footwear, and sometimes arthritis. Because the joint is being loaded with every step, untreated deformities usually become more pronounced and more symptomatic over time.
What actually helps
- Footwear and padding. A wider toe box, padding, and toe spacers relieve pressure on the deformity.
- Support and offloading. Orthotics and taping redistribute load away from the painful joint.
- In-office care. Injections or other treatments for inflamed joints when conservative steps fall short.
- Surgery when warranted. Considered when pain limits daily life and conservative care has had a fair trial.
When to see a podiatrist
See us if a bunion or toe is becoming painful, if the joint is stiff or swollen, if a toe is drifting or overlapping, or after any injury to the toe that limits walking.
